It's not that I don't want us to win, I just want us to secure the #1 pick.

We've had a really solid draft this year, and are going big in the international here shortly.

I fully expect this team to compete next year for a wild card spot. 1) It's a new stadium so management isn't going to let another repeat of this year happen where we purposely fill our roster with retreads hoping they'll do better than last year. 2) If our current young guns continue playing well it'll be like the Medlen-Minor-Beachy rebirths in the early 2010's. We'll likely see Albies-Swanson up next year, which would be giving us another new core like Freeman-Heyward did. After that, we're maybe 1 or 2 more power bats away from really making things interesting. I don't mind keeping Ender and Mallex out there, if they can get a big power bat in RF or 3B. I'd also be completely fine with Flowers starting full time if we acquired a bat for one of the previously mentioned positions.

If we can compete for a wild card spot next year (essentially be what the 2010 was, not ready to win it all but ready to get to the playoffs) PLUS have the #1 pick and another great draft, we could be setting ourselves up to compete for another decade.

I'd absolutely sacrifice some wins this year, if it means we're going to improve the #1 farm system and make it even better than it already is now, next June.

Solid 2016 Draft + Amazing 2016 International + Solid 2017 Draft w/ #1 Pick = :pound: for a decade.

I want the players to play well and progress, but I want to secure the number one pick too.

Loser checking in.

Checking in... Can't say that I get a smile when we beat Harvey/Matz/DeGroom/Jose in consecutive nights!! that is a good roll!!

But I would like another top 5 pick.

Yeah, im just wanting that top slot. Looking at the roster, I don't see much way that doesn't happen. If it doesn't ill still consider it a win because it likely means some people stepped up and played well.

I'm very conflicted on this issue. I don't actively root for the team to lose, but I think that losing to the tune of a top-three draft pick is probably the only good thing that could come out of this season, other than getting some good reps out of some of the young guys.

I guess I'm kind of a tempered tanker. The losses just don't sting like they might otherwise, and they actually have an upside, but I can't bring myself to root for Julion or Wisler or Folty, for example, to get rocked.

While watching the game I still get excited when something good happens. But then if we lose I am never disappointed either. So it is basically a win-win every night.

checking in!

But I always want a balance -- I don't want to see our young guys get rocked.

But fans have to realize, these wins are somewhat meaningless and a top-3 draft pick is a HUGE deal.

We need to trade more of our good players to ensure the top pick. The competition for it is especially tough this year, so lets empty the cupboard.

If we traded Freeman, Teheran and Viz to the Sox and took back the contracts of Sandoval and Ramirez imagine what a yuge return we could get.

Yeah, this. It's oddly comforting. Winning is terrific, mediocrity sucks, but being THIS bad is actually kinda ok.

Checking in. I also cannot actively root for us to lose, however this is a lost year, and there is no question the higher the draft position we get for the 2017 draft, the better. So I hope to see improvement from the young guys, especially down on the farm, but understand the losses this year help our future much more than meaningless wins.

If we go .500 the rest of the way (ain't happening), we finish 70-92. That's at the very least a top-5 pick and probably top 3. I think playing well or better than we were can only help going into the new park. If you draft smart, you're gonna get a stud in the top 5. If we just trade every single good player, we are not going to be good for a very long time. I'm not saying no necessarily to Teheran and Freeman trades, but they would in my mind require a severe weakening of the other team's farm system. Established MLB players PLUS top prospects.

I think we'll be bad enough as is without essentially wanting us to lose.
