Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz Interview on Dan Le Batard Show

Summary:

Part 1 - Host asks who the toughest hitter they all had to face was. They all say Tony Gwynn. Glavine obviously mentions Mike Redmond. Maddux mentions Mike Mordecai and says that Barry Bonds was the best overall hitter they faced, while Gwynn was the best at making contact. Smoltz says he is amazed that no one threw a no hitter between the three of them, although he maintains that he threw one in San Diego. He tells of Ryan Klesko having a ball pop out of his glove on a routine fly ball, and the hometown scorer inexplicably awarded a base hit to the batter Tony Gwynn. It was the only hit of the game. He says that was the only time he ever got livid and "rearranged the clubhouse."

Part 2 - Host asks everyone who had the biggest impact on their careers. They all mention Bobby. Maddux also mentions his pitching coach when he was 16 who told him he needed to work on his location. Host asks Maddux when he first felt the effect of Bobby in his corner. Maddux talks about how he was angry after a 3-2 loss in the middle of the season had a record of 6-8. Bobby told him that if they could manage to score more than one run for him, that he'd have at least 11 wins by that point. Glavine tells the story of how Maddux got Bobby thrown out of a game (it's hilarious).

Part 3 - Smoltz tells the story of Maddux getting scared of a snake on the golf course. Smoltz also talks about how Maddux would rear end his car on purpose at stop lights to the point where the back bumper eventually fell off. Smoltz talks about how he tried to pitch like Maddux and Glavine one day at Shea Stadium (hitting spots, low pitch count) and got lit up.

Part 4 - The three pitchers recount the worst moments of their careers. They all said their first years and last years. Maddux recounts throwing a perfect pitch in 2008 with the Dodgers and looking up at the radar gun to see it read '83 MPH'. He knew he was done then. He said he wasn't trying to get guys out that year, he was just rying to keep them in the park. Glavine recounts his release by the Braves in 2009 before he got a chance to make it back to the big leagues. He said he was ticked off in the heat of the moment, but really knew that he had nothing left. Maddux says Smoltz's short game is what he envies about him most.

Part 5 - Best segment of the show. Seriously. Listen to it. Maddux FTW.
