Just witnessed 125 mph winds and the fallout.

Question
Why do we still have above ground utilities?
99% outage in our area that could be alleviated with meaningful jobs and long term cost reduction. Granted in the next week all power will be restored
Wonder why no candidates run exclusivly on 21st centuring our infrastructure.
Carolinas are in the path, hasnt that area just, started rebuilding ?

The argument against will be cost.
Feel free to assume where this goes next

We could update a lot of ****ing infrastructure if we just spent less on the military.

Or if we properly taxed entities that profit from utilities and infrastructure.

Some would argue that mitary spending is in effect an infrastructure expenditure of sorts

You could but every right and freedom we have and share doesn’t mean a thing if we can’t properly and promptly defend them.

Completely agree on both points.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t spend any on the military. I just think we could fix a lot if we took something like $110 billion and moved it toward something else, and we’d still outspend China by more than double.

Defend from whom ?

At this rate our military would be defending a skeleton of broken cities, collapsing bridges, deteriorating roads , land polluted by chemical farming and air / water unusable for human consumption.

To defend freedom ?
Freedom to do what ? From whom ?
At this rate, who will/would want what you so anxiously want defended

In fact this rant began watching electrical crews work around the clock repairing damaged infrastructure by returning it to the 19th century reason it blew over.
When there is an alternative

About 25 years ago, the very rural WNC home I grew up in was without power for nearly 3 weeks after a blizzard because a stretch of power lines nearly a mile long had to be replaced on poles. It's amazing how much less of a problem it was to me back then than it would be now.

I had hopes that above ground wiring would be a target of the Obama stimulus a few years ago, and again when Trump was pushing an infrastructure spending package last year. It's unfortunate, but apparently major infrastructure repair just isn't worth enough votes for either side to get it done.

Imagine the good to come from a $5.7B investment in upgrading our electrical grid .
