Mallex Smith promoted to AAA

I'd like to know who those concerns are coming from. Having seen Braxton personally more than a couple times I personally have NO question he can handle LF, and think with a little work on conditioning he could play RF as well as Markakis does now.
If that is the case why did braves move him to 1b?

Boom.

I love Davidson. Need Ks to go down but he's only 19.

Forget it. I read earlier in this thread that if a guy averages 10% strikeouts in the minors he will average 10% in the majors, but if he averages 20%, he will go up to at least 25%, which basically makes his value crumble like a house of cards.

Read, averages, he has time to improve with only about 450 PA under his belt. And even if he fails to reduce those, if his power is legit that can help wipe out part of it. Smith's issue is he has nothing to fall back on but his ability to hit and walk and speed when he's on base.

That, and the fact that players don't start facing serious pitching more frequently until AA level. Facing better competition could cause him to similarly elevate his performance. Somebody obviously thought he deserved the promotion.

All your metrics are good projections and all, but the fact is, we have no idea how he adapts. Yes, his strikeouts are a tad high and yes, speed tends to neutralize at the ML level, but guys outperform their MLEs all the time. All. The. Time.

The dude is hitting.340/.420 (I don't give a rats ass about power in a run scorer, though i think he'll develop some) and appears to have mastered every challenge. I'm willing to watch him try before deciding his K rate will go up and walk rate down and BABIP down and contact down making him Ryan Langerhans.

BTW, I look forward to seeing your boy Davidson. We could use a little power around here. Can he handle LF all right? Our man in Pearl thinks he can.

I think Smith deserves a shot, I would trade Maybin at the deadline and bring Smith up. Might as well give him 1 and a half years to play CF.

It is easy to engage in selective memory when coming up with comparables for prospects like Mallex Smith. So lets look at a list of all outfield prospects ranked in the 81-100 range by BA in the last ten years. The list includes both corner outfielders and center fielders. We can separate them later. But from this list I think we can get an idea of what the success rate has been for outfield prospects ranked close to what Smith might be after this season.

Brad Snyder
Joey Gathright
Andre Ethier
Ryan Sweeney
Matt Kemp
Nolan Reimold
Brian Barton
Drew Stubbs
Chris Parmelee
Gorkys Hernandez
Ryan Kalish
Gerardo Parra
Jaff Decker
Mike Trout
Jeff Neal
Peter Bourjos
Josh Sale
Joe Benson
Mason Williams
Hunter Renfroe
Jorge Bonifacio
David Dahl
Nick Williams
Michael Choice
Billy McKinney
Tyrone Taylor
Rafael Devers

Devers??? He's a 3B.

I'd sell high on Maybin if I could. But I'm not giving him away to clear the path for mallex.

If we give Maybin away and are going cheap with mallex and peraza then I would assume we are landing two big free agents

Given how he's played, we wouldn't be giving Maybin away. Now I think we'd get a better haul if he kept production up and we traded him in the offseason, but I would absolutely float him at the deadline. Someone like Texas may consider taking him so they can make a push.

I guess it depends on what you consider an appropriate package for Maybin.

A solid prospect. THere's a lot of doubt with Maybin, we'll likely never get value to the poitn of fleecing someone ala Gattis. But let's say we get talking to a team like TExas, Look at their pre-season top 20. You're not getting Gallo, you're not getting Mazara. Now lets get to brass tax. Jorge Alfaro would be my target. And it wouldn't be an easy sell either. But i think if we paired Maybin and Pierzinski, we may be able to pull him away. Nick Williams and Lewis Brinson are 2 other guys I'd like to get back.

I think we are at the point we need to see what we've got from our young guys and see what we can get for our older guys.

Dream scenario is someone buys Markakis off of us. THat would solve so many issues, but I can't see that happening. Fingers crossed maybe Baltimore gets desperate and offers us Jomar Reyes for him. That's a pipe dream though.

I'd put an org's top 20 prospect price on everyone not named FF, Simmons, Peterson, Tehran, Wood, Miller, or Wisler. Not sure we'd get a lot of bites, but you never know. At the deadline maybe you relax some.
