Mallex Smith - splits and progression

don't have to explain it, you just did with your last sentence. win are wins, value is value. It doesn't matter how you get it as long as you do. Being that there is no "recipe for success" as far as making or winning in the playoffs, all sorts of team constructions work (see KC Royals last 2 seasons and their low power OF for example)

Their starting outfield (Rios/Cain/Gordon/Dyson) had a total of 35 homers last year... Not sure how anyone can say, 'you can't win with no power in the outfield'... when in fact a team just won the world series without power in the outfield

Indeed, look at the Royals OF for 2014- 2015, few homers, good OBP and good defense, The team could use a different RF'er with more power, but Mallex and Inciarte are just fine.

and the year before they had even less homers and lost the WS in 7 games.

I'm so glad you brought up the Royals and their lack of power in the OF. Now go actually look up the power they got from Cain, Gordon and the rest of their OFers. Gordon and Cain out-homered the entire Braves OF themselves last year.

There is "low power OF" like the Royals, and then there is "zero power OF" like the Braves. I suppose some people think it is wise to construct a roster that hits for almost zero power in the OF as long as those guys are fast, so it's pointless to argue the matter. Quoting the Royals doesn't even make sense when the Braves make them look like mashers.

that is not what you said.. you said the Braves can't win with Ender and Mallex. That is not true. We could sign Cespesdes next off season and have an out field that could out homer that production. No one on this entire board thinks the team can win as constructed. WE NEED MORE POWER!!! But you can get that from RF/3B/C/ plus Swanson might provide 10+ a year..

nailed it! I don't think the team can win with Mallex, Inciarte AND Neck as our starting 3. But we could win with Mallex, Inciarte and Trumbo, or Cespedes, or hell, Reddick as our staring 3 . (and to be honest, Trumbo starts to become a decent buy with Mallex and Inciarte because their range means the CF'er can cheat towards LF and take some of the pressure off Trumbo on defense, tho he would be my 3rd choice of the 3 OF'ers mentioned )

If Mallex and Inciarte gave us 8 homers a year and we got 25 from the 3rd guy, we'd be just fine. (and really, the 2014 Royal got even less than the 2015)

I can maybe get on board with this line of thinking if the other bat brought in is of the level Ces is currently playing...however...

1. I think Ces has realistically priced himself out of Atlanta.
2. I don't think getting rid of Markakis is going to be as easy as some of you make it out to be.
3. I think the team would be better served converting the value of a surplus CFer into equal or greater value at another position of need.

For example, Inciarte brings back a pitcher that allows the team to trade Teheran for a more traditional corner OF hitter.

depends on if Inciarte can get his hitting together to provide the value. Plus, we can always bench Markakis as his money is dead money if they can't find a trade partner.

I won't disagree with any of this.. I think Ender/Mallex will hold more value by end of season than Neck will. But we can win with them.. the FO would have to make the right moves. However, we can't win with Mallex and Neck either. Neck provides nothing to the team and we will need to dump him or trade him to ever have a chance.
