March 3: Detroit @ Atlanta

I'm not basing anything off today. It's his career. He is a walking machine, and according to scouts, there's not an obvious fix to it because his mechanics are already smooth and repetitive.

I've watched a good bit of film on him. When he's on, he maintains a 3/4 arm slot and doesn't drag his arm through his changeup. When he gets lazy or rattled or he's just not on, his arm drifts to a more overhand motion, and he drags through his changeup which leaves it up. Fixable for sure.

Thanks. I've never watched him pitch... just reading some scouting reports and looking at the stat lines

Scouts also have him as a top 25 prospect in the game. His most common comparison, John Lester, also had a problem with control in the minors. It's not an uncommon thing.

Actually it would probably be more accurate to call it "very common". Not a whole lot to get worked up about unless he is 25 and still having issues. Kimbrel was considered very wild and fixed it very quickly as he came up.

so what everyone is saying is that Volstad has a chance to turn it around.. or can I start calling him names yet? because he stinks..

Yeah. Fair. I hope he turns into a stud.. but I'm not yet sold
Honestly, I'm not either. But I don't think I am ever sold on any young pitcher. Since Avery, the Braves have been littered with disappointment in one way or another.

Well, I guess this is what I deserve for using a double negative.

That's the point I tried to make.

Lefties with electric stuff often have trouble finding the zone when they're young. It's usually even worse when you're a big guy like Newcomb.

In any event, he can walk a fairly significant number and still be effective. It he doesn't improve his control much at all he could still easily become a Gio Gonzalez type pitcher and that's pretty valuable.
