Matt Olson to Braves!

The only thing I don't like about this trade is the opportunity cost. I think I would have preferred to slightly over pay for Freeman and use those prospects to get a really good centerfielder. With that in mind, I think it's likely that we couldn't get Freeman for a slight over pay. So I'm more disappointed in the end result rather than the decision.

This. And the fact that it always hurts to see the face of the franchise retire/be traded/sign somewhere else. Freddie has been the Braves since the start of the rebuild - before Acuna was Acuna, Ozzie was Ozzie, or Fried was Fried.

Not sure why everyone is so set on it being black or white. Was it the "right decision" from an organizational standpoint? Sure. That doesn't mean it doesn't hurt fans and even management deeply, and Alex' press scrum yesterday reflects that about as well as anything can. The organization and fans haven't seen a situation where doing the right thing hurt this bad since Murphy was traded away. Alex apparently was backed into a corner where he had to take this PR hit to try to keep the window open and he's going to be the bad guy for a while - that's his job. He probably felt he had to make the deal when he did or he was going to wind up with Rizzo because he thought Oakland was going to move him to someone else if he tried to delay any longer and meeting Freddie's demands (which weren't entirely unreasonable regardless of what some say) would more than likely insure that the window closed before the end of Acuna's tenure and would have forced him to possibly trade BOTH Ronald and Ozzie to start the next rebuild.

I think there are plenty of people that understand this was the likely (and probably best) outcome from the start, but there's nothing wrong with being someone who wished Freddie would have announced he was taking more money to go elsewhere BEFORE AA had to pull the trigger - it certainly would have hurt less.

Gomez: Carlos Baerga said on his IG Live that Freddie Freeman will be signing with the Blue Jays, who according to Baerga, could experimenting Vladdy Jr. in other positions.

Baerga broke Marcus Semien and Yimi Garcia's signing and Berrios contract extension.

A friend told me that FF changed his position to 3B on his IG profile but I never saw it. Best case scenario, IMO.

Maybe it's because Ronnie has been out so long it's recently based. Other than that, I don't understand it either.

No legitimate fan actually thinks Dansby is the face of the franchise.

Its a clown take to push an agenda.

It was always the right move not to give Freeman 5-6 years, and I stated as much the moment his FA contract started being discussed.

He was offered 5/135, which I considered too high but acceptable, and AA probably increased that offer a bit over the last week. Freeman clearly is trying to max his earnings, just like all FAs do, and the ask obviously got way past the point of making sense. The bidding got to the point where giving up a painful package for Olson hurt less, which is exactly what I suggested would force AA to make this trade.

So now all those folks blabbering on and on about Freeman wanting to be a Brave for life are once again reminded why that’s rarely the case. It certainly won’t stop them from saying the same moronic things the next time a similar situation arises…almost certainly when Olson reaches FA..”yeah but, THIS time is different”.

My one new thought on day 2 of the Olson era is a concern about the pressure that he'll face. Hometown kid replacing a beloved face of the franchise player who just brought a World Series to Atlanta. Undoubtedly he's watching the coverage the past couple days and seeing that its all about losing Freddie, not about gaining Olson. He's a ridiculously good player and if he's just typical Matt Olson he'll be fine. But I worry a little bit that he comes out of the gates with a 3-30 start and is suddenly getting booed at home by Braves fans annoyed that he isn't Freddie. Nothing he can't overcome, just a little concern.

I agree it's a lot on Olson.

Another reason I hope the braves go out and get another major piece. It shouldn't be Olson vs FF. It should be Olson + Conforto + 4th starter vs FF. Share the burden.

i think for a stud CF you’re giving up even more top prospects.

I think you're right, but I'd trade one top prospect for Brian Reynolds right now, which is probably what you would have had to add to the package that went to Oakland. Then you'd have Freddie and Reynolds.

I don't actually believe either of those options were possible, but just stating what would have been preferable to me.

Nice. As enscheff always points out, signing a guy you traded for to a long term contract makes the trade much better.

When the contract is below market value it definitely makes it better. This is fantastic.

AA and Olson showing fans what it looks like when a player says they want to be in a place and means it.
