Medlen

If Garcia starts and we win that game will people give Fredi credit?

Pinch-hitting Hudson for Chipper is a bad move, regardless of what Hudson does at the plate. The better move doesn't always work, but it is still the better move. A bad move doesn't always fail, but it is still a bad move.

Its not as clear cut as it seems. Medlen would be on short rest and had a bad game 1. Garcia is on full rest and has pitched very well coming into this start. We wont get the benefit of knowing how Medlen would have pitched in game 4 in order to compare. If Garcia sucks then by all means blame Fredi, but I think he deserves some credit for having balls of steel if Garcia does something like 6 innings 1 run like most of his starts have been so far.

You can support Fredi and still disagree with some moves he makes. I disagree with this decision and it could end up ending our season. I just don't understand why he would start Garcia if the season is on the line, it doesn't make any sense. That doesn't mean he should be fired however.

It's not certain that Medlen, who the Dodgers just saw and handled with ease, on short rest would be any better than Garcia. Medlen's had two playoff games and had bad luck in both. The Dodgers haven't seen Garcia yet. He's only pitched in the NL 1 year, 2007 with Philly.

Also, if you short rest Medlen in a do or die game don't you wear him out for his next start?

Medlen is better than Garcia and thus is still a better choice even with a bad start and short rest. I want my best on the field as much as possible

Garcia is not a good pitcher and shouldn't be pitching in the playoffs despite his small sample size of 'success' with atlanta. If Meds does go on short rest and we advance he could either start game 2 on normal rest or be pushed back for game on extra rest. Either way I don't think it matters.

Minor pitched better on October 4 than Medlen on October 3. No doubt about that. I just would look back a bit and take into account a slightly larger sample to make the decision on who should pitch in a hypothetical game 5. Btw I thought Medlen pitched well in last year's Wild Card game. Not a great game in the sense he didn't overcome the error Chipper made behind him. But he was doing well up until the error.

It helped that Heyward took back what would've been a two-run homer for the Cardinals early in the game. Medlen gave up a few too many hard hit balls that Wild Card game. He wasn't bad but it wasn't one of his better games either, IMO.

Medlen gave up 5 earned runs in 4 innings, how exactly is that better than giving up ONE run in the first inning?

Plus the poor throw and EJ dropping it hurt Minor in that first inning too. If the throw is good or EJ doesn't drop it, then with EJ's arm they have a real shot at nailing him at the plate with a good throw.

If Minor can't go a first inning without giving up a run or runs, I do not want him pitching against Kershaw. That's why winning game 3 is so important. Then you could start Garcia on a short leash in game 4.

So if Minor gives up 1 first inning run, and that's all he gives up, he shouldn't pitch at all?

Of course not. His job is to give us the best chance to win. I think EVERYONE agrees that it is not our best chance to win if Freddy Garcia pitches an elimination game - regardless if it works.

In my opininion, even if it does work it could be a bad result, as it might earn him more starts later in the postseason that comes back to bite us.

I'd rather not fall behind to Kershaw. I expect Medlen to pitch better the second time around. Minor does do a great job of settling down and wiggling out of trouble, so to answer the question, no. Minor also struggled all of September, and I love how one start from each has changed the perspective here so quickly.

The talk of Minor's struggles in Sept. have been overblown, etc. If you count game two of the playoffs, Minor has quality starts now in five or his last six starts (only one that wasn't was the 4 runs in 6 innings vs Miami). Further, I cannot speak for others here but I never lost faith in Minor. He didn't have the great Sept. that Medlen had but he wasn't bad either overall.
