Megathread: Braves lose Maitan, Bae and 10+ plus International Sanctions.

Assuming all the 2016 International signings get to keep their bonuses and become free-agents, Coppy's likely going to need his attorneys to prepare a defense against a suit from the Braves rather than vice-versa.

Probably should've kept his mouth shut and taken that severance package offer.

When you're pissed you're pissed.

Blakeley was pissed off and ready to drag the Braves down in flames with him. And it happened.

Dear Baseball -- we have rules.

If you break them, you might be caught. But don't worry, if you are caught just fire your front office and everything will be fine. You get to keep all the players you cheated to get and bear no further penalty. Better luck next time in not letting your front office cheat.

Who is it that's running that front office? Who is it that's calling the shots with the rule breaking? The same guys getting fired. If you're a GM, which do you fear more, getting fired or having some prospect contracts voided?

With MLB giving the firing of everyone involved no weight, it just means the next team, if they're happy with their GM, will take the punishment and keep their GM. There will be little to no ramifications for the people breaking the rules.

Yeah, the Braves aren't going to do that.

By honoring those agreements you are punishing the other 29 teams who were cheated the opportunity to sign those same players. For example, if the Braves did hide Maitan in a Miami hotel room for months from the Cardinals and Nationals then what compensation should the Cards and Nats receive from the Braves for being cheated?

This really comes back to Coppy not having any humility. If he didn't treat people like crap this may have never gotten out. This is going to suck, but if he was an obnoxious ahole like it has been reported, then it was going to happen sooner or later. I hate that we're going to lose players, but I'm glad we moved on from Coppy and have AA.

Any young guys who have never had power before should take notice of what happens when you abuse it.

The compensation is hobbling the Braves in future signings by either a ban for a time, reduction in bonus pool money, or both. The rest of the league gets a boost by not having the Braves to compete with.

The fact remains that there is now absolutely no incentive for teams to self-discipline or even cooperate with MLB's investigation. There's no reason for a team to hold the people breaking the rules accountable.

The NCAA learned long ago that the best way to keep things in line was to get teams to report themselves and discipline themselves. You do this by coming down ridiculously hard on teams that don't and going easy on teams that do.

By coming down super hard on the Braves who are the first team ever to fire their GM over this, MLB is sending the message that holding people accountable isn't important. If they had considered Coppy getting fired part of the punishment then maybe other GMs feel a bit less secure when flaunting the rules knowing they might be the next one thrown to the wolves.

Good perspective brought through sarcasm by JC Bradbury:

“It won't be long before much of Bravesnation will be in the throes of losing prospects they've never heard of (or weren't qualified to judge) who probably won't play a day in MLB.“

If all we lose is a bunch of no names from this past June I think "Bravesnation" would be rejoicing. It's not the prospects we've never heard of that's the problem, it's the ones we have.

Gutierrez gone.

Well that sucks. I figured Gutierrez would be included. Everyone said we gave him a much larger signing bonus than anyone else would have. Some of that money probably went to his handler.

One frustrating thing is that I'm absolutely certain that the Braves will roll over and meekly take this. They wont try to sue, appeal, or do anything. You'll hear phrases like "turn the page" thrown around instead.

If I owned the team we'd be having Manfred Day at the park in 2018 where everything from pre-game festivities to bobble head give aways would be aimed at insulting Manfred.

I'd be filing a grievance against all 29 other teams for their IFA violations.

Regardless if he would have busted on the Braves, you can be rest assured that Maitan will be the superstar he was always hyped up to be now! For real though... MLB better be making a crap ton of prospects FA after this if ANY wrongdoing by other clubs is found. This is unprecedented and ridiculous.

If they were in deed looking in to 12-15 other clubs then surely they're going to find some wrong doings there as well.
