Melvin Upton rumor from Peter Gammons

He had a poor 2009. But from 2010-2012 he had WRC+'s of 107, 113, and 108. Those are above average seasons. Nobody was expect BJ Upton from 2007. They were expecting the BJ Upton from 2010-2012. And that was a pretty good player. Above average hitter, good defender, and great base running. Sign me up.

I still think he can get back to that level. He's still got the tools, unlike Dan Uggla. Contrary to popular belief, his bat speed is still there. He can still get around on a fastball.

I see it, too. Staying quiet seems to really help, what with that long-ass bat and those long-ass arms.

On a semi-related topic, Lil Guv explained to me the other day that he was right eye dominant and so on the right side he was going to "open up his stance, like BJ" so he could see the ball better.

Come to think of it, his coach insisted he hit lefthanded only for the all star tournament a couple days later. Coincidence?

Oh yes just pick stats that you believe make him an above average hitter.

If BJ were traded I think that Heyward would play a lot of CF for the last part of the year and we might try to pick up a serviceable corner outfielder on the cheap. I highly doubt we'll trade BJ though.

In 2010-2012, BJ was an above average hitter... very few people would argue against that, except maybe you... above average doesn't mean fantastic... it means better than average... which he most certainly was.

BJ was a 3+ WAR player in the three years prior to coming to Atlanta. He had a 3.8, 3.9, and 3.2 WAR in 2010-2012. In 2007 and 2008, he was a 4+ WAR player. The Braves thought they were getting a 3+ WAR player when they signed him, and if you go by the value that says 1 WAR is worth $5 million, then his contract was fair. The results have not been good, but at least BJ is on the positive WAR side this year. He's been unusually bad for him in his Atlanta career thus far, but he's starting to trend towards what he was doing in Tampa Bay the four years prior to coming to Atlanta.

He's the ultimate tease player. I see some fans are still holding out hope that he can be good.

Sad, really. He is what he is and that's a strikeout machine that will steal you some bases an hit a few homers. Money would have been better spent elsewhere and some of us said this when he was signed.

His struggles really aren't that surprising. He's just not very good.

A. Simmons at bats are starting to look like he did earlier in the year instead of what he's shown the last few weeks. He's swinging as hard as he can and trying to pull everything.

I believe it, but I don't think Wren will get anything done.

Same here. Wren would love to move BJ Upton, but no one will take him given that contract. Further, we really don't need to ask who do we replace him with because there are so many better options. The Braves are also interested in signing Cuban OF Rusney Castillo who could be ready for MLB before the season is over. So if we somehow moved BJ that would make room for him should we get him signed. But we also have options in the minors I like a lot better than BJ Upton too.

That said, I do agree about Gammons not having solid connections with the Braves. He is often wrong but in this case he is just reporting what some GM told him apparently. Plus given his track record, he is probably adding to it with the "at almost any cost" comment.
