Looking back, one of the biggest signs where it became clear Republicans had become something uniquely wicked was when the ACA passed and Republican governors refused the Medicaid expansion. There would be no downside to taking it, it would keep people alive, it would create jobs, it was good for the budget, and it’s something you can run on. It was a political no-brainer. But those governors refused it and let their own people die. Maybe it was to spite Obama, maybe it was because Ayn Rand told them to, I really don’t know. But it was a huge red flag that they posed a much greater threat than we thought.
