The Mets are holding "voluntary" off-season conditioning right now in Port St. Lucie. No big deal, and hardly thread-worthy.
Except Mets' beat reporters are saying (based on quotes from the team's strength and conditioning coach himself) that the team is charging its minor leaguers to participate. $1,000, apparently. That's not a small sum of money for most minor leaguers. And when you consider that these workouts are usually "voluntary" in only the most meaninglessly literal sense of the word, this just seems more and more noxious and low-rent.
