Minor League Roster Guesses

Hessmania Forever
I can pretty much guess the Gwinnett roster, but I am really curious as to what everything will look like AA and below.

Spring training is so different than what it used to be. They cycled through so many guys from the lower minors during the spring training games and I can't figure out if they were just throwing them a bone or if they were actually assessing their performance. We're still fairly light in terms of quantity of prospects, but that's improving and we always seem to find a quality guy or two during the season.

Anyone else have any thoughts on the matter?

Most of them seem pretty straightforward. Spencer Schwellenbach is one I'm interested in - whether it's Rome or Mississippi. Also curious in the college guy from last year's draft - Baldwin, McCabe, Alvarez. Hopefully Maier is healthy enough to start with a team. Augusta highlights will likely be Murphy/Ritchie, but I'm curious to see if there's any international guys that end up there. I guess Ambioris Tavarez could be the only one.

I've gone back and forth on the college guys. They aren't that well stocked in the low minors at this point, so they may have to push guys like McCabe and Baldwin a bit and start them in Rome. Same goes for Alvarez, who they obviously like.

I see that Glod and Benitez got into a spring training game or two, so maybe they are in Augusta. I will take a look at the rosters and see if I can make more sense of things.

Lots of interesting arms here. Our first two 2022 picks - Owen Murphy and JR Ritchie. I'm surprised to see Spencer Schwellenbach here as a 22-year-old, but guessing they want to ease him in as he comes back from TJ. Seth Keller was our 7th rounder last year out of HS, smaller kid but good arm.

Tyler Collins in the OF here after missing last year with injury. Elite speed, slap hitter.

Ambioris Tavarez making his full season debut. He was our first big international signing after the penalties. Supposedly a great defender, approach at the plate needs work.

This roster is more fun than I expected for sure.

Another interesting name I missed: RHP Didier Fuentes (https://www.milb.com/player/didier-fuentes-800311). I know absolutely nothing about him, but he's 17 years old and starting the season at full season ball after having a good year in the Dominican Summer League last year. Pretty rare for someone to be pushed that quickly, especially when they're not a big name international guy. Good numbers in the DSL last year though.

The Augusta announcer tweeted that he'll become the youngest player to make an appearance in affiliated baseball in the last 6 years. Pretty crazy.

Interesting rosters in Rome and Augusta. They obviously love Alvarez with the aggressive push to Rome. A bit surprised that he and McCabe weren't switched given McCabe is a college guy (although they may be moving McCabe to 1B full-time). Backstrom still hanging around. A little surprised on Kilpatrick in Rome, but he's a college guy as well.

Rome will have some interesting offensive players (Baldwin, Alvarez, Kilpatrick, Quintero, Mezquita, Zebrowski). Morton and Paolini made some steps forward last year and we'll see if their tools continue to translate. Looking at the Rome pitching staff, it's Smith-Shawver and not much else when it comes to ceiling.

Augusta should be a lot of fun. More ceiling than Rome in terms of pitching prospects and a lot of younger developmental hitters. I doubt Schwellenbach will be in Augusta that long. Looking forward to watching the OF situation play out. Celedonio has been around for what seems like forever, but hasn't seen the field that much since his debut in the DSL in 2019. Casanova and Workinger will take a back seat to Collins in terms of prospect-cred, but Worknger managed to find his way into several spring training games. All eyes on Tavarez. If Francisco Floyd can hit, he might be someone to watch as well.

Adam Maier had some sort of TJ alternative surgery last spring, I’m guessing that’s why he’s not opening somewhere. Hopefully won’t be too long. He’s an interesting one.

Two other top 30 prospects not on rosters are Jesse Franklin, OF who had TJ last spring, and Cole Phillips, HS RHP who had TJ last spring. Phillips might be out the whole year, depending on how they want to ease him back into things.

Mississippi roster: https://twitter.com/mbraves/status/1643693694292221952?s=20.

Gross. Cal Conley is probably the most exciting player here, and that says it all.

This is the least exciting roster.

Vodnik and Rangel down from Gwinnett. I was a little surprised that both weren't in Gwinnett, but they've been replaced in AAA by more experienced guys who could be plugged in more readily at the back of the bullpen if needed.

Biggest buzz on the pitching staff is probably Roddery Munoz. Gordon pitched alright last year and they seem to like De Avila (young at age 21) from what I've read. Riley, Barger, and Segal all logged some spring training innings and Barger has a really solid K-rate (and not-so-hot BB-rate) so maybe they see something. Montilla coming off major injury.

Big test for Conley. They seem to like Milligan as a utility prospect. Same for Waddell. Bunnell has to be the happiest 40th round draft pick in the history of 40th round draft picks. Odd in that his performance improved dramatically from Rome to Mississippi last year. Small sample size and he still strikes out too much, but he still's hanging on as a possible mini-version of Mike Hessman.

As is the case throughout minor league ball, it's always going to be difficult to determine how much was lost in individual cases by the cancellation of the 2020 minor league season. That's what shows up to me the most on this roster.

Tyler Tolve must be banged up as well. I thought he'd be in Mississippi and he did get some ABs in spring training.

Looks like I'll be seeing Augusta more than Rome this year....but Rome typically gets a few interesting players after the season starts.

Augusta is really young. A lot of the high school guys from the 2022 draft and some developmental guys that have piqued my interest. As I said above, I was a bit surprised in that I thought Alvarez would be in Augusta and McCabe in Rome given the high school/college player distinction, but from what I've read (not much) they really like Alvarez. I think the guys who are candidates to just get their feet wet in Augusta and then move up provided they perform well are Schwellenbach, De Grandpre, and the aforementioned McCabe.

It will be interesting to see how Jared Johnson has recovered from elbow surgery.

I think you're right about the rest of the guys. Phillips and Maier are recovering from surgery and Militello, Jackson and Williams are likely still in extended spring training and will probably be in the FCL.
