Minor League Thread Part Deux

Hessmania Forever
It looks like the minor league thread got dropped in the migration.

Some good performances on Friday night (opening night for Columbus, Rome, and Augusta).

Columbus loses 5-3 to Montgomery. Tough night for Hackenburg (2 IP, 4H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 K, 2 BB). James McCann goes 2/3 (both 2Bs) and drives in 2. Dave McCabe goes 1/3 with HR.

Rome wins 6-2 against Winston-Salem. JR Richie scuffles a bit (4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 K, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 1 HRA). LHP Samuel Strickland (Braves' #19 in 2021 draft) gets the win with 2 clean IP with 2 K. Top hitting performances from OF Patrick Clohisy (Braves' #11 in 2024 draft) going 3/4 with 1 RBI with Bryson Horne (NDFA in 2020) and E.J. Exposito (Braves' #16 in 2022 draft) each hitting a HR.

Augusta tops Columbia 12-7. RHP Owen Hackman (Braves #9 in 2024 draft) starts but doesn't get through 3 IP. Win goes to RHP Anthony Garcia (International FA in 2022 out of Cuba). Lots of hitting (obviously) with Braves' #20 pick from 2024 OF Eric Hartman coming up big (2/4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HR). 2024 #15 Adam Carey DHed and went 2/5 with 2 2Bs, and 3 RBIs. 2B Colby Jones (Braves' #13 in 2024) went 3/5 with a 3B, scoring 1 and driving in 1.

Gwinnett nudges Nashville 2-1 in 11. Big news here is Strider worked 5 2/3 of no-hit ball with 8 Ks and 2 BBs. Verdugo debuts and goes 0/2. Murphy goes 0/3 as he rehabs. Stripers got 5 hits. 2 apiece for Williams and Cooper and 1 from Waddell. Interesting to note that Waddell has played exclusively at SS this season. Saw him play live last summer when Gwinnett played against the St. Paul Saints. I don't know if Waddell is tall enough to ride all the rides at the amusement park and he looks too stocky to play SS, but it's obvious he's a gamer. He's not on the 40-man, so I don't know how the Braves see his future, but he could get the call if any of our IFs go down. He's off to a good start with the bat (.407/.484/.481) with 2 2Bs. 11 Rs and 3 RBIs.

I put this in the KLAW thread but it fits better here:

Augusta could have a sneaky fun outfield to follow. We have two late round high school signees in the OF/DH from last year's draft... Eric Hartman (Canadian HS kid) and Owen Carey... Then we also still have Isaiah Drake who could put something together with his loud tools as he's only 19. All 3 had a great game one with Carey working at DH. Guanipa there too although I'm a bit down on him at the moment.

I also hope McCabe can rebound fully healthy this year... would be nice to have a few position players break through.

Some interesting performances over the weekend.

Brightest performances were with the bats in Augusta, where Hartman, Carey, and Drake all had good weekends. After the first three games, Hartman is 6/14 (.429), 3 R, 4 RBI, 1 2B, 2 HR (Walk-off for the win on Sunday). Carey went 4/14 (.308), 2 R, 4 RB1, 3 2B. Drake sat out the first game, but is 4/7 (.571) with 4 R, 2 SB. 2B/SS/3B Colby Jones also showed well going 4/11, 4 R, 2 RBI, 2 SB. Rising prospect SS John Gil is off to a slow start 2/13 (.154). but stole 5 bases and drove in 4 runs. Microscopic sample size, but we might have a few hitters to watch in Augusta.

It may be choppy waters in Rome. A good set of pitching prospects, but hitting looks iffy. Garrett Baumann had a rough first outing Saturday, giving up 7 ER in 3.1 IP. 4 BB and 4 K. Didier Fuentes didn't fare much better Sunday allowing 4 ER in 2 IP (3 BB and 4 K). RHP Ryan Bourassa (NDFA in 2023) pitched 2 scoreless innings on Sunday and struck out 5. Bourassa was part of the Braves' contingent in the Arizona Fall League in 2024. Top performances from hitters thus far come from IF/OF Lizandro Espinoza (acquired in minor league phase of 2024 Rule 5 draft) is hitting .364 with 2 2B, R, RBI. OF Patrick Clohisy (Braves' #11 pick in 2024) is hitting .400 with 1 2B and 3 RBI. SS/2B Ambioris Tavarez is repeating High-A and here's hoping he can cut down on the Ks. OF Titus Dimitru (Braves' #16 pick in 2024) went 3/9 (.333) with 1 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI.

I want to say Mississippi, but then I remembered it's now Columbus. Similar to Rome in that we'll be watching pitchers more than hitters for the Braves' AA entry. Clingstones were rained out on Sunday (I hear you guys are having some rough weather down there). Lucas Braun threw 6 IP and struck out 9 on Saturday, but surrendered 3 ER coming on 2 HRs allowed. LHP Hayden Harris (NDFA in 2022) pitched 2 clean innings and struck out 3. INF Cal Conley went 3/9 (.333). Scored 2 runs and stole 3 bases. 1B/3B/DH David McCabe is hitting .400 (2/5) with 3 BB. IF Cade Bunnell continues to stick around after being drafted in the 40th round in 2019. He's been a strikeout machine since being drafted (36% K-rate over 5+ seasons) but he avoided adding to that total by going 2/4 with no Ks on Saturday night.

Way early and it's easy to get tempted by 18- and 19-year-olds getting their first taste of pro ball (both Carey and Hartman have skipped complex ball), but watching Augusta this year may provide us with the hope of adding more position player depth in the system.

Man… I hope Tavarez can keep this up. He’s started out on fire and apparently putting up real good at bats.

The new approach by my man Tavarez has been fantastic. Great approach..changed stance. I'm not a fan that he's at 2b, but he's been fantastic there. Lone man on him, but I like him.

Saw video of the Hartman walk-off homerun. That was a mammoth homer. I don't know the dimensions of that park, but it sailed over right center field wall with 20-30 feet to spare. And in the rain no less. Impressive for a 19 year old.

Off a lefty to boot. Early, but looking good so far.

Intriguing development on a pitcher that has been dominant...albeit in a small sample size. But watched Luke Sinnard strike out 7 in 3 innings. Mid -90's FB..some type of slurve/curve /slider. Kinda wraps his wrists around the ball and it explodes on hitters. Tall dude. We drafted him in the 3rd round after he led or set a school record for strikeouts in college. Very intriguing.

Sinnard could be a fun one to watch!

Thanks for that report

Put this in the Verdugo thread but thought I'd put it here too: I want to see Carlos Rodriguez get a chance at some point. He doesn't have any power but all he does is hit... he's fast, he walks about 10+ percent of the time and only K's around 10-12 percent of the time. He hasn't had a chance in MLB yet and is only 24. Send Fairchild down for him.

Gotta admit..he's nice to watch. He's unlike any of our hitters. Patience...zone control...not far away, he's solid for real.
