Minor League Thread Part Deux

This is why I say velocity isn't super concerning to me. Obviously it helps, and there are a lot more TOR starters throwing 94+ than there are throwing 92. But a fastball getting 20+ inches of IVB (and another 7" of arm side run) is gonna play well no matter what, as long as you can command it somewhat well.
I do agree, but if yall hated on Elder (I did) until now, wait until Owen and that IVB ain't IVB'ing. I surmise that he'll be a solid pitcher. Ups..downs. At this point any uptick in velio would be short lived. He's much better sitting at lower velo. He's got time to change what people think still.

Are there a lot of TOR starters throwing 94?

Or just a lot more than throw 92?

Sure. Top 10 RHP pitching bWAR since 2021, Range of average FB velo during those years

Wheeler: 94-97
Webb: 92-93
Burnes: 94-96
Cease: 95-98
Gausman: 93-95
Cole: 96-98
Alcantara: 97-98
Ohtani: 94-95
Gallen: 93-94
Peralta: 92-94

Keep going down the list you have Nola (91-93), Gray (91-93), Scherzer (93-94), Pivetta (93-95).

Dixon Williams did well in A ball last year in his debut post draft... had a .415 wOBA and 150 wRC+

He's started the year in A+ with a cool .451 wOBA and 172 wRC+

Small sample this year but you have to love how he's started his career. Even cooler since he can play all over the field. We have some exciting position guys to watch.

That doesn't sound great

12:20Kate: Any word on why we haven’t seen Diego Tornes in any complex games yet?
12:22Eric A Longenhagen: Hmmm, idk, I’ll ask someone there but I don’t think I’m getting an answer. I saw him three times while I was in Florida, looked OK, not obviously awesome. Prototypical power hitter build, average bat speed, below avg barrel feel

His bat speed is literally one of his is calling cards. He had some super impressive EVs last year, with an average EV of 88.1 as a 16 year old.

So, yeah. I'm gonna go ahead and completely write off whatever that dude has to say.

I also would like to write him off but Longenhagen is the Fangraphs prospect guy

Also he said he saw him in Florida.... Exactly when/where was this? Because he's yet to play a professional game in FL. If he saw him at some showcase before he signed or doing some spring training work, then that's not really scouting him.

I just thought it was worth posting because it was the first negative thing I'd ever heard about him
These guys are literally why I eye ball my own stuff. Not saying they are or are not good at what they do, but myself, Gaurav and one scout I know has seen the exact opposite. Tornes EV'S were the rage last year and in ST this year. It's like there was a report that said Guanipa had a 35 FV power grade...Hartman was said to have average power projection...etc.etc. At this point, you so can just watch highlights and make your own assumptions. He was in Florida a few weeks ago watching minor league games. These FCL teams do a lot of games against each other before the official season starts, and that’s when he was in Florida.

I think Longenhagen does a good job, but my biggest complaint about Fangraphs coverage is that Eric lives in Arizona and is constantly covering teams with spring homes and complex teams in Arizona. He’s really good with those guys. But they have basically zero people east of the Mississippi and most of their prospect coverage shows that.

Those Tornes comments are interesting either way though. Not like he got a huge number of looks at Tornes because of where Eric lives, but I do think he’s a good prospect evaluator.

Gil and Hartman with a cool 2 homers a piece today thus far as Rome is crushing it 15-3 in the 6th inning. Hartman now up to an absurd 12 homers. What is the ceiling for this guy who is fast as hell too? Gil is looking just so sexy too.
