Minor league thread

We are really going to get soroka back at full strength just in time for playoffs aren’t we?

I'm not sure the real goal has ever been to have him ready for the postseason. I feel sure they'd have been thrilled to have him come back with 4 minor league starts just like his first one - more because it would push Morton and Wright to maintain focus since there was another legitimate option to make a playoff start. That's probably the reasoning behind the Odorizzi acquisition as well - the hope was probably that his presence would allow Anderson to get straightened out with a couple starts in Gwinnett so they'd have options they at least felt comfortable using in a playoff game even if 2 of the top 4 were hurt/weren't sharp/ran out of gas. Unfortunately the Anderson quick fix hasn't gone well and Soroka has been prone to that one lapse per start since he's still shaking off tons of rust.

I think the goal is to get Soroka up for a couple starts before the end of the regular season for two reasons - 1.) to reward him for the incredible amount of hard work he's had to put in just to get to the point that he's competing again, and 2.) you're not worried he'll crumble under the pressure of pitching against good teams in the heat of a tight race when you're looking to get extra rest for the other guys and to line them up like you want them. Muller and Elder have made a few solid starts, but they came against the Marlins - I don't think it's unfair to question whether they'll be able to perform the same way if you needed them to start during that last series against the Mutts so you could line the rotation up.

Based on some Twitter follows the runs were mostly attributable to lack of solid corner infielders. Soroka has looked really good overall. I wouldn’t be shocked if he makes a start in the third week of September.

I don’t see him as a starter this year. I only see him as a scheduled relief pitcher. Example you know strider is likely to only go 4-6 in playoffs. You tell soroka he’s going through the line up one time as a piggy back

I hope they take their time on Albies. He’s not looking good. Still pounding balls into the ground.

Albies is great but we need Albies back not early season swing Albies.

I would be shocked if Strider is limited in anyway. His innings per start is on par with the rest of our starters.

How awful is his stance and wind up at the plate now? Does he even resemble a MLB hitter anymore?

There is absolutely no reason for them to backtrack after saying they're not going to limit Strider's innings - they (including Alex) haven't danced around that subject at all at any point. You're trying to win a second straight World Championship, so it's perfectly reasonable to expect Alex and Snitker to ignore plenty of things because of the situation.

That said, the first person that criticizes either of them if he blows out after he blows out will be an idiot. He pitched 63 TOTAL innings while at Clemson, and 66.1 TOTAL innings in the minors last year - if his next start goes like most of them have, he will have logged as many innings THIS SEASON as the total number of innings he has pitched since high school.

It's all but impossible to take the ball out of his hand at this point, but if they keep giving it to him it needs to be done with the understanding that he may very well turn into the 2020s version of Steve Avery.

Class A seasons ended yesterday. Rome Braves finish with an overall record of 74-54 and win the second half of the South Atlantic League Southern Division with a record of 38-24. The start their playoff series tomorrow (Tuesday) night against first half champion Bowling Green. Low-A Augusta finishes 69-62 and didn't qualify for the Carolina League playoffs in either half of the season. Rome picked up a lot of Augusta players in the second half (Niekro, Conley, Mezquita, Durbin, Zebrowski, Quintero, and Morton) as a lot of 2022 draftees were incorporated into the Augusta line-up.

If I have time, I'd like to do some research and post some impressions. That might take awhile.

AA season ends this coming weekend and the AAA season runs all the way to September 28. It used to be that Labor Day weekend was the drop-dead when it came to minor league schedules, but with the "Monday off" for most teams, they decided to extend the seasons well into September.

IIRC that was done so that rehabbing players that might be added to playoff rosters would have a more competitive environment to play in.

No question that Ozzie needs that right now - he'd have been screwed if he would have been limited to ABs against complex league guys.

First hit was a left-handed single off of Tyler Glasnow. All the others (other than the bomb) were against RHPs as well.

Something clicked - if he's getting around as well as hoped, it wouldn't be surprising to see him active for the Phillies series Friday IMO.

Elder with another strong start as well - probably need to see him, Muller, and Soroka once to give everyone in the rotation a blow and to set things up. Not sure having one of them replace Stephens on the postseason roster would be a bad idea in the event one of the SPs has a bad outing and you need someone to step in and soak up several innings like Wright did when Lee flopped last year.

It was 4 softly hit base hits as a LHH and one bomb as a RHH for Ozzie. So more of the same. Guy needs to give up LHH.

I don't disagree. That said, making contact and putting it in play (at all) from that side is better than he was doing to start the year.
