Schwellenbach to Rome, Tyler Owens to Mississippi.

Dope. Excited to see Owens finally ascend to AA. I think he’s the first of the 2018 later-round prep guys to reach even that level for the Braves (though I think Estes has gotten there with the A’s).

Plus Vaughn Grissom.

Jared Johnson had TJ. He’s back now, but walking the world in Augusta. Backstrom was released, and Kadon Morton is still in the lower minors doing nothing.

I wasn’t counting Grissom, since they snagged him in the 11th. But he’s certainly been the most successful of the post-top-ten that year.

Watching Rome host Jersey Shore, with Fried on the mound. Two homers already for Ignacio “Nacho” Alvarez. With power being the biggest question-mark in his profile, it’s nice to see he’s starting to elevate the ball while still producing a high AVG and OBP.

I was there a couple of weeks ago. Not much on the roster to be excited about, but Nacho brings some electricity when he steps up. He's also a likeable guy.

Here's video footage from the game.

What’s his story. Potential impact this year or groom for next. He a flame thrower? Detested or CJ. 411 please

Daysbel Hernandez is a Cuban defector the Braves signed as an OF (although he never played OF once signed). Throws hard (can hit high 90s). Deester has probably seen him live, but the only thing I've read/heard is that he's "Body by Bartolo." As a result, there's some question about his overall athleticism and durability. Sat out 2022 with arm surgery. Big K numbers whenever/wherever he's pitched. Had a big year in 2019 with the Florida Fire Frogs and I thought he'd be a candidate for the 60-man roster pool during the COVID season, but he was not.

Kinda spot on. Thanks 50/Matt. Always loved the arm and hate the body, but he can bring it.

The good : Love the arm. Can bring it. When his slider is on, forget it. I cared less about his FB because it's good, but that slider off of 98 (at times) is deadly. The swings are some of the ugliest I've ever seen. Heavy fastball. Gives up few homers. 9 his entire minor league career. Hard to barrel him for sure.

The bad : I'm pissed at Mauricio Cabrera still. When he's off, it's the spitting image of him. The times I saw him, he has been good (4 times to date). The last time I saw him was a couple of years ago. When he got hit his slider wasn't close and they sat on his FB. Any professional hitter that learns to lay off a pitch that is not working will hit it. But again, he wasn't necessarily barreled, just hit hard (make sense)?

Overall...there is potential there to help the Braves right now. I like him. If he had a better body, I wouldn't complain..lol. I think Braves country will love him though.

Not related to our minor league system (and I don't know if it's been posted anywhere else), but the Angels released 3B/1B Kevin Maitan off of their Rocket City roster in mid-June. I check in on the infamous surrendered international signings every now and then and just found that out today. Maitan has caught on with the American Association (Independent League) franchise the Lake County DockHounds.

I remember atleast one person saying they wouldn't trade Maitan for Trout.
Lmao..the hype was certainly over the top! That being said, the warning signs were there before he ever inked that deal. Almost unanimously scouts loved that guy to be fair. The Angels were even considered to have made the deal of a decade (after Trout) for having signed the guy after the sanctions.

As alluded to before, he was a star in his own mind before he signed. A kid with guaranteed money buying cars and jewelry two years before he ever signed. He probably kept Piccadilly in business all by himself.

When you hear the words..."Physically mature body," "plays above his competition," or "advanced for his age," be afraid. Lol. Not in all cases, but projection is huge for international players. I'm not a fan of beating up already inferior competition. It's an inexact science though and I'd rather play in the international market than not. But when you see the lesser heralded players become stars, that's when it's special.

The international market is a roll of the dice in a lot of ways as you have pointed out. It's difficult enough to judge a prospective stateside draft candidate at age 17 or 18 and it almost gets to be geometrically different when a scout is looking at 15- and 16-year-olds in the international realm. Differing rates of physcial maturity simply mask where a kid will truly end up. My guess with Maitan is that he was ahead of his cohort in terms of physical development and that when the rest of the cohort caught up physically, he was no longer that special. He's not that rare of a case when you look at highly-publicized international signings who didn't perform up to expectations, but the fact that he was at the center of the sanctions and he didn't get above AA puts him in the spotlight to a greater degree.
