Minor League Thread

FCL Braves win the FCL Championship Series 2 games to none over the FCL Yankees. Scores were 3-2 on Friday and 9-1 today (Saturday). Braves advanced to the finals by beating the FCL Mets 7-1 on Thursday.

Winning Pitchers: Thursday, LJ McDonough (UDFA RHP), Friday, Brooks Wilson (Rehab Assignment); Saturday, Rolando Gutierrez (2nd Year LHP).

Not a lot of hitting stars even with some crooked numbers on the scoreboard. Nice series for Isaiah Drake (who really had a strong finish to his season after a rocky start). Douglas Glod hit a HR Thursday and a 2B today, but struck out most of his other ABs. Diego Benitez also had a couple of big hits.

Difficult to get a read on the team as a whole. It was pretty much a revolving door all season, especially after the 2023 draft picks arrived. Glod showed power and pretty good plate discipline, but strikes out around one-third of the time.

Like Drake, Benitez' last few weeks (> .800 OPS in August) pushed his final statistical profile up. Benitez' K-rate only upticked slightly (20% to 22%) from last year and his stat line improved. Batting Average Up, On-Base Percentage Down, Slugging Percentage Way Up.

OF Robert Gonzalez and IF Luis Sanchez--the top offensive performers for the Braves' 2022 DSL entry (not saying that much)--fell off (Gonzalez by quite a bit) in the FCL. Sanchez walks a ton, but I'm skeptical about walk rates in the DSL and complex leagues because the pitching is likely inconsistent.

Pitching was middling. Finished in the middle of the league statistically, but not great K numbers. Always difficult to tell at this level unless some is eye-popping.

As always, curious to see who goes where next season.

Waldrep...all I can say is wow. That man made them lol like little leaguers. For all of the command talk I've seen or heard, he didn't show it. That split thingy was illegal.

Waldrep ended up going 4 2/3 with 10 Ks, three hits and two unearned runs. He was at 66 pitches when he left the game, so it's pretty apparent that the Braves are not interested in pushing him too hard right now after a long college season.

I only stayed 4 innings as I had other things going on. I don't try to be a know it all, but most of you know I'm all about my prospects. I'll just say this, when we drafted Ryan Cusick, I felt his arm was worth millions but his command was dollar general. In watching Waldrep, I acted like a school girl gushing over him to my girl. It was not healthy.

The things I love: that Damn splitter was deadly. They couldn't touch it. It was ridiculous to watch. I kept thinking lay off of it morons...swing at his FB. IT DID NOT MATTER. I try to see what scout are at games and I saw two that were disgusted at his arsenal. I'm not juicing him up. I fully expect bumps..but on this night...I thought..BRAVES next great SP.

I waited on his command to waver but he was in the zone enough to force the ugliest swings you'll see. That said...

What I paused on: the location of those sliders /splitter things would give mlb hitters pause. To me, bring it up just enough in the zone so that it's viable in the eyes of the mlb hitters. It would still get out 60% of mlb hitters. But I'm nitpicking. On this night he was a stud. I was thinking best draft pick in a While.😂😂😂

(He gets bonus points for stud walks after a strikeouts)

Yes. Thanks Tapate. I usually take pics with my outdated slr camera..but it was enjoyable. I don't like that they've changed Rome into more of a corporate setting though. Ugh. The appeal of that park was the intimacy of it. You literally could think Truist but better. I used to park at the gate and walk in for the promos. In any case..love that park.

We will see all we need to know the moment we get mlb statcast data on Waldreps pitches. Until then it’s just speculation.

True, but the visual eye test was pretty good. The entire stadium WATCHED. Go to any minor league game and unless it's a stud, they ain't doing that. It was fun.
