Might be working on bus fare back to Mississippi.

Truthfully, if you look at the pattern of his career, he's always had a rough time after a promotion to a higher level. I don't know if he has a major league future, but I'm going to give him some time to adjust. I don't think he was ever envisioned as a high-ceiling arm, so pitchability is going to have to play large in his chances for success and that means making adjustments.
 
Another good outing in Augusta today for Cedric de Grandpre - 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K.

On the season, he's now up to - 20.2 IP, 13 H, 5 R/ER, 5 BB, 27 K.

We might be seeing him in Rome soon.

Only given up one run in 4 appearances (17 innings) since his rough first outing. Agree that he's someone to watch.
 
I wonder how much game planning happens in tripA. If catchers sort of just call a game based on what a guy can throw. Shoot not even sure if a manager doesn’t just call a game. I don’t really know. Look at Elder. He was blasted his one game in tripA this year and he was considerably worse down their last year.
 
I am of the understanding that there are two ways a AAA game can go -

1) a pitcher is told to do what he does and he will get the call up when he is ready and there’s a need - but show us you can win…

2) a pitcher is told - “you are getting called up in the next short amount of time, you made it, now work on xyz - throw 40 sliders in a row until you get the feel for it, or etc etc - see you real soon” and they work on a game plan with development staff and coach - no one is looking at runs allowed or hits or etc.

I have never been told this by anyone first hand - so I could be more wrong than pigs mating with porcupines
 
Baseball America had AJ Smith-Shawver on a list of prospects that just missed their top 100. Some interesting notes on him in it:

There’s a lot to like about Smith-Shawver, whom the Braves chose with their seventh-round pick in 2021. After a dominant run in the High-A South Atlantic League, he was bumped to Double-A, where he’s now one of the youngest pitchers on the circuit and will pitch all season at 20 years old. He’s also got some filthy stuff. His four-seam fastball and slider each grade out extremely well on Stuff+ models, and his changeup is OK as well. Each of Smith-Shawver’s three pitches has garnered chase rates of better than 23%. The righthander’s fastball is particularly nasty. The pitch sits in the mid 90s and has touched 97 mph. More than pure velocity, the fastball has an outstanding 20 inches of induced vertical break. That figure should jump in the Southern League, which is using a ball that has shown early signs of amplifying pitchers’ IVBs.
 
Really encouraging from Soroka. If his numbers were declining I’d be worried but just the opposite. Maybe another start then bring him up.

Honestly I think Soroka can throw innings in AAA or MLB, won’t make a difference to him. He knows how to be successful. As long as he would t be worse than Shuster or Dodd then he needs to be in ATL. Working with mlb pitching coaches, catchers and defense might actually help him get to where he wants to be.
