Minor League Thread

@gvedak posts a lot of clips with spin rates on Twitter and I mentioned the low spin rates to him…he said he attributed it to the new ball in AAA and he’s gonna give it a few starts before it becomes concerning for him

Yeah, the new baseballs AA is experimenting with produce much more movement for sure.

That’s ridiculous that each level uses different balls. Isn’t the point of the minor leagues is to get players ready for the majors? How are teams supposed to do that if different balls are used at different levels. Makes no sense. Everybody use the same ball. We all knew that AJSS would give up a run at point and scuffle a little. He did and it’ll be good for his development. How he bounces back will tell a lot.

I’ve been on this tirade before but messing with the balls without telling teams and or making changes to it too late to adjust is absolute bull****

And then not owning it and lying about it just flat out stinks

Dumb question. But is that something that can be improved upon since he's only 20 and only very recently began pitching?

There are exceptions to everything, but most guys by this age have the spin that they have. Since nobody knows why some guys can spin the ball better than others, nobody knows how to train for better spin. Therefor, planning around guys adding spin would be pointless.

Of course, a couple decades ago everyone knew velocity couldn’t be trained. That is, of course, an absurd idea today. So in the future guys may be able to train up their spin, but I don’t think that future is now.

I agree with you wholeheartedly - but doesn’t apply here - baseball fully informed everyone about the new balls at AA - I’m pretty sure that’s why we brought AJSS up from there to AAA - we normally would have left him in AA and then straight to the show from there. They didn’t want him getting used to that ball.

Is Ignacio Alvarez a real prospect? He's hitting .300 with an .849 ops. 20 years old in A+

I think Nacho Alvarez is a real prospect. If you can get on base at a .400 clip you'll have a use. If he could stick at SS, then that really could make him something.

I thought it was good to have high or low spin rates for movement. You just don’t want to be avg.

I still think ajss has sss issues and I’m not over hyping him. But every write up says the guy has good stuff. How good? That is a fair question.

I don’t think we’re really gonna know until he pitches in the majors. Minor league stuff can be so skewed.

So I have learned in my time to not get too high or low depending on what happens at AA (different ball notwithstanding) and slightly less at AAA. I hate they changed the ball as someone mentioned because that jump is significant for development. I am excited about AJSS but just like Vodnik in A, he was a man amongst boys even as a teenager. So it will be interesting to see what becomes of him, but dare I say I really like him. Spin rate notwithstanding he is good.

Vodnik had a superb game yesterday going the last innings with 4ks and no walks - one hit - no runs.
Am really hoping he has figured this thing out finally and will get his shot in the MLB pen soon.
The big club needs him, and he could be such a weapon- I always thought he was gonna be our closer of the future, and still hope that to be the case !

The thing with Smith-Shawver is that he's only been concentrating on pitching for two years so even with his impressive start, there's probably some room for further development and maybe an increase in spin rate can play into that. I have no idea.

I don't get him pitching in AAA at this point. Either him or Dodd need to be up and stop the stupid BP games that Twit has no clue how to manage. Plus our pen is awful with a bunch of soft tossing junk ballers that they hope hitters will swing at balls. So they walk the world and have high pitch counts.

I would rather Soroka or Dodd up pitching innings over anyone in our pen not name Riggy or Nick Anderson. Soroka clearly my first choice.

Baseball America writer on Twitter:

Per sources Braves 2022 first round supplemental pick JR Ritchie will undergo Tommy John surgery later today. The surgery will fix a moderate grade two tear.

Darth Vodnik would be a helluva closer meme.

Snitker may not know how to manage a bullpen game, but he doesn't have a lot of bullets in the gun for a bullpen game even if he could.

My guess is Soroka will be up soon. Curious to see how the strategy to rebuild his approach will work.
