Minor Shoulder & Urethra Issues

With the rotation depth already one of the weaknesses, this is even worse news than it normally would be.

(From the same article) Not sure if I can figure out the sequencing of the spring rotation. Its Garcia, Medlen, Beachy, Teheran, and Wood/Hale (split squad day). If the days track for Medlen to be opening day starter why would Beachy be ahead of Teheran?

How is that a weakness again?

Minor
Medlen
Tehearn
Wood
Beachy
Garcia
Floyd
Hale
Martin
Host of other arms to use for 1 start at a time.

What is the definition of solid rotation depth and who has that?

Minor - hurting - young
Medlen - seems to be okay - young
Teheran - pitched more innings than ever before - young
Wood - seems to be okay but is going to end up in the bullpen - young
Beachy - coming off another surgery, huge question mark - young
Garcia - terrible - old as ****
Floyd - coming off surgery, question mark - not available for a few months
Hale - seems to be okay - young
Martin - would have to be rushed

How is depth NOT a problem when Garcia is going to be the #5, and there are SO MANY issues throughout the limited options?

But again, where are the teams that have that much more than that? Once you get to the fifth starter its all dicey.

Your labels on what these pitchers are can be used on basically any starter in baseball other than true aces and veteran innings eaters.

Check out the other COMPETITIVE teams. Go ahead. Try to do so without your thethe Gonzalez glasses on.

So you are saying that other top teams don't have either young pitcher, hurting injury risk pitchers, and veteran fodder throughout their rotation?

Sorry, we can't be the Dodgers and have aces all throughout the rotation.

I think just about every pitcher could have a list of similar concerns. Verlander just had abdominal surgery. Felix Hernandez had something worrisome show up when his elbow was looked at. CC has falling velocity and concerns about weight fluctuations. And it goes on with just about every pitcher.

I don't think depth is an issue for our pitching. At least no more so than just about every major league team.

We have 7 decent starters. After that the quality falls off. But it does for everyone.

And in most seasons the 9th and 10th starter makes less of a contribution than the backup catcher, fourth outfielder or utility infielder.

And we have neither. That is a weakness. Almost every competitive team has at least one. Some of the better ones have both.

That is not at all what I am saying.

We had better depth last year and STILL looked liked idiots at the trade deadline (and at the end of the year).

Have you looked at how little depth teams like the Tigers, Giants and Reds have after their five starters?

Starting depth is important. But we are actually in better shape than quite a few of the other competitive teams.

Our starting pitching depth last year was quite poor. We got bailed out because of Wood's unexpectedly fast development. If you compare our likely group of starters for AAA with the group we had last year, there is no contest.
