MINORS FINAL 8/13: Davidson promoted to Danville

No. 1 pick Braxton Davidson has been promoted to Danville along with pitcher Oriel Caicedo to give the D-Braves a little push in the pennant race. Trevor Sprowl has also been added to Danville, down from Rome.

As has been discussed below, 17 year old pitching sensation Dilmer Mejia has been promoted stateside to the GCL Braves from the Dominican League, where he was an all-star. All he did today was pitch five shutout innings in his debut.

Based on his four-hit, four RBI day in the GCL today, Joey Meneses should be ready to be returned to Rome or promoted further. His injury derailed a tremendous start of the season.

With Poythress going on the DL, maybe for the season, the M-Braves have added FA Erik Castro. He's a catcher-first baseman who was released by the Astros in June but has been playing for Fargo-Moorehead (.319-1-14). But this 26-year-old had 27 homers and 108 RBIs (second in the league) in the Cal League in 2012.

Saw yesterday that Davidson will spend the last couple weeks of the season in Danville. Probably addressed already, but brought it up in case someone didn't see it.

Always a good sign when your first pick is promoted in his first taste of professional ball.

Splendid GCL debut by the splendidly named Dilmer Mejia.

5 3 0 0 1 4

Just turned 17 in July. He and the almost equally spendidly named Ozhaino Albies make for a very good 2013 international signing class.

What do you know about his stuff? I'm not a fan of short pitchers (aside from Medlen).

Unlike Medlen, Mejia is has just turned 17 and could hit a huge growth spurt between now and the time he turns 21. Also that Urias kid from LA is short and pretty dagum good

10-0 game in Dilmer Mejia's stateside debut. The talismanic power of his name making itself quite apparent early.

The farm system sure has taken a big step in the right direction this year. Peraza surpassed even the most optimistic expectations. Braxton is in my opinion is the best hitting prospect (ignoring position and defensive value) we have had since Freeman. Ozhaino I want to see how he does at Rome before I get on that hype train.

I am going to predict Davidson spends a full year at Rome, maybe a two week promotion at the end of the year, then splits 2016 at high A and AA. Then competes for a spot in spring training but probably gets 2 months at least in AAA.

Davidson looks great thus far. You have to love it when a hitter so young has such a great knowledge of the strike zone. Last guy we had that was like that was Heyward.

Good to see that Meneses will get some swings in before the end of the season. My guess is he'd have been promoted to Lynchburg if he hadn't gotten injured.
