Minors report 828: One-hitter for GCL Braves; M-Braves in 1st Place Tie

The Mississippi Braves closed out the home portion of the regular-season Tuesday night at Trustmark Park, finishing the season with the largest total attendance since the 2008 season. The M-Braves plated an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth to defeat the Stars 4-3.

After Jacksonville lost to Montgomery 8-6 and Mobile dropped a 4-2 contest in Tennessee, the M-Braves enter the final five games tied with the Suns for the Southern League South Division lead. Mississippi (36-28, 74-60) scored four runs on nine hits while Huntsville (27-38, 56-77) plated three runs on six hits and an error.

The M-Braves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Mycal Jones and Christian Bethancourt reached on back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners. Tommy La Stella followed with a RBI-single to right field. Edward Salcedo then grounded into a double play, allowing Bethancourt to score the game's second run.

In the bottom of the third, Salcedo reached on a fielder's choice. He then stole second and third before coming in to score on a Jose Martinez single, extending the M-Braves lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the eighth with the score tied, Salcedo singled and moved to second on a Martinez sacrifice bunt. Robby Hefflinger then reached on a fielder's choice. Hector Gomez tried to cut down Salcedo at second but an errant throw allowed Salcedo to come around and score, giving the M-Braves a 4-3 advantage on the error.

Gary Moran (4-2) tossed two frames to pick up the win. Kevin Shackelford (1-1) gave up the unearned run on one hit and a walk to take the loss. Pat Egan (S, 4) came in to record the final three outs and notch the save.

The M-Braves take a day off to travel to Jacksonville, FL, for the final five-games of the 2013 regular season. Braves right-hander Michael Lee (9-8, 3.64) takes the hill in game one of the series Thursday at 6:05 PM CST. He'll counter Suns lefty Andrew Heaney (4-1, 2.60).

Eric Pfisterer is certainly old for Rome but I don't realluy care with relief pitchers. I think he could move really fast next year and finish up in AAA. Big lefty who is striking out a lot of guys. Anyone have a report on his stuff?

La Stella is the man. He has quickly become my favorite Braves prospect. If FW has to eat half of Uggla's contract then so be it. La Stella has shown that he is ready. Why waste this guy in the minors next year when all he's done is prove that all he does is hit and get on base at every level.

Looks like Kyle Wren just wasn't drafted because of his dad(like JS jr.) but this kid is a legitimate prospect and one that is worth keeping an eye on.

No. He doesn't have to go on until after next year. He's slated for the Arizona Fall League. That, combined with Uggla's return, makes a call-up unlikely, but who knows.

I don't pay a whole lot of attention to the GCL team's performance either individually or collectively, but from the K numbers racked up by the hitters, it looks like it might be wise for the organization to have some LASIK brochures on hand. Doesn't look like any of our 2013 draftees on the team did particularly well with the bat. Some nice arms though. But again, I take this league with the whole shaker full of salt (outside of obvious red flags).
