Minors thread 731: Upton, GIlmartin Proceed With Rehab

BJ Upton begins his rehab tonight in Gwinnett, playing center and batting leadoff.

Upton was retired on a fly ball in the first, struck out swinging in the third and led off the 6th with a ground ball to short before leaving the game. He handled four fly balls in center without a hitch.

At the other end of the minor league food chain, Sean Gilmartin blew through the Gulf Coast Blue Jays to the tune of three hitless innings Wednesday morning. HIs pitch count was up only because he struck out five (alongside zero walks).

On the back side of that game was another encouraging performance: three shutout, hitless innings for Andy Otero to record the save. Otero struck out four and walked no one. Throw in Ian Stiffler's so-so three innings (six hits, two runs), the GCL Braves struck out 10 and walked zero in a one-run win.

No word if Stiffler's mother was in attendence.

Primed for the leadoff spot already. Nice!

Interesting that Williams Perez has pitched better in Lynchburg than he did in Rome. I remember reading a so-so scouting report on him somewhere on the net (might have been Talking Chop), but he's relatively young and the Braves have moved him rather slowly. Interesting to see how he projects going forward.

Johan Camargo's batting average looks good, but does anyone here have a handle on the rest of his game?

Heretofore this season, La Stella has posted a .333/.403/.428 in 201 PA. At what point should the Braves consider promoting him to Gwinnett?

Yeah he should be promoted. The other one I've wondered about is Shae Simmons. He deserves a promotion as well.

Down in rookie ball, Cody Livesay and Victor Reyes should be bumped up to Danville.

Yeah he should be promoted.

That's my thinking as well. I like Uggla probably more than most, but I think re-signing McCann is a damn-near necessity, and the easiest way to generate more fiduciary wiggle-room is unloading Uggla, who (unlike, say, BJ Upton) is actually having a fairly solid season (outside of batting-average), who plays a premium position, and whose right-handed power at said position might be attractive to a decent number of teams (particularly in the AL, where he could also slide over to DH). Given those factors, it would be nice to at least ascertain if La Stella looks ready to start in the majors come Spring 2014, and challenging him at the next level up for the rest of 2013 is probably the best way to do that.

If the Braves are willing ot eat 5-8 million on Ugglas deal there will be takers.

Especially because contracts are about to get inflated.

I know ppl hate it but I think uglla goes to an al team in a kimbrel deal in the off season.

It is the only way I see us keeping Mac clearing uglla and getting talent to upgrade the team.

What possible scenario can you concoct where a team can get both Uggla and Kimbrel from the Braves?

Rangers. Move kinsler or ugla to 1b. My trade has gattis too for profar plus a b prospect.....but I'm drinking at the beach

When he can stay out of the trainer's room on two consecutive days.

Please elect me President of the "Get Beer Can Dan out of Atlanta Club." I agree that keeping McCann is crucial going forward and we've got big money tied up in Uggla and BJ Upton and that is going to make signing McCann difficult.
