I know of several new businesses that are thriving in downtown Marion, it's going through a bit of a renaissance. If I remember correctly, thats just a few minutes down the road from your town. I was also told that the plant north of town going toward Linville that makes plumbing parts was hiring recently, and I know of multiple new vineyards in McDowell county. I know some people who had a delay building their new home because of the home construction boom happening there.

For the first time in my lifetime, that entire area is on the upswing, and they did it without selling out to the transplanted hipsters or the faux mountain culture like so much of WNC did. Your take on it is surprising.

Several of those businesses are doing quite well for the time being - they're the ones I mentioned have hired bartenders and waitresses. "Thriving" is a monstrous stretch, but they're trying to fit in to the "mountain culture" you bring up. The plant north of town was hiring - there's 100 (or so) new jobs. Add the waitresses and bartenders, and you might have 200. The "construction boom" is a mirage that will disappear twice as fast as it showed up - the vast majority of new construction stems from people who have absolutely nothing to do with the local economy, they're retirees or relocating eastward from Buncombe County trying to avoid the higher cost of living/cost of housing/higher tax values there. They spend all their money there and simply commute back-and-forth to work, which drives numbers here higher without creating jobs. It really sucks, but the people here are about to start screaming bloody murder when they see their new tax valuations - the vast majority can't afford them and still go to all the new bars and vineyards. The newness of all this is beginning to wear off, and the new restaurant/bar/brewery scene is quietly beginning to slow down because the non-locals have sampled everything and aren't interested in driving 30 miles to have a drink, and the locals can't afford $7 craft beers more than once a month if they're going to pay their bills on their $25,000/year salaries.

The largest employer in the County is still the same one that was the largest employer in the County when I graduated from High School 30+ years ago, and the area would completely dry up if it ever left for crying out loud.

The most recent big "festival" was the Bigfoot celebration that occurred today - how far do you think that will carry an economy?

This thread is really about pitchers missing the strike zone isn’t it. Chuckie can’t be allowed to come back next year. Just can’t. I know you can’t blame all of it on him. But you can’t replace an entire pitching staff. Someone needs to stress the importance of strike one to these bafoons.

I'm still amazed that he was ever brought in, but I think the pitching staff as a whole has exceeded expectations this year.
