MLB optimistic about starting season in late June

Not to mention you have a bunch of players with underlying health conditions that are more at risk of complications. Duvall is type 1 diabetic. Anthony Rizzo has had cancer. Kenley Jansen has a heart condition. And there are others.

I agree. If they play this year, players like Duvall and Jansen should sit out.

The real issue here is the players coming home after games and spreading to their families. I don’t know how they’re going to circumvent that.

Well the plan basically still calls for semi-quarantine of players. That will probably be another non-starter. What players are going to want to be away from their families for that long? And how do you stop players catching the virus from their families. Even if they’re supposed to be quarantined away from people, these are not the smartest humans on the planet and you know some are going to sneak away to see families, hookers, “personal trainer/dealers” and will be exposed to people who could have it.

being a person who got this virus

it ****ing sucks

is the risk possibly low?

yeah, i guess

it is virtually no risk?

no

It's virtually zero risk for healthy people under 40 years old, which is most baseball players. There are exceptions and those players can sit out if they want. The real risk is if those players interact with other more at risk people.

How do you figure?

Just look at the data. Healthy people under 40 years old are close to zero risk of death in pretty much every country. This is especially becoming more true as more of these antibody tests are being done.

I can why snell (and all players) would be against this deal, but he looks horrible with his comments when 34 million Americans have filed unemployment claims in the last 2 months.

There are risks just beyond death. Risk of family getting sick. Risk of long term damage. There are also still so many unknowns about the disease at this point that that’s a big risk in and of itself. Plus as has been stated not every mlb player falls into that healthy category.

Family is at even less risk. A full risk analysis would have to include all sorts of things including potential risk of not playing. But I'm sure that would be close to zero as well. There's a lot of irrational fear out there, which is understandable. I have fear that one of my kids will get it, but I know that fear is irrational. It just intrigues me that a young healthy athlete would think they are at significant risk when that really isn't the case.
I think some players can sit out. I'm talking about the vast majority of players though.

Everyone is at risk of covid19. We've saw world leaders to Hollywood elites all the way down to the elderly in retirement homes get it. The CDC estimates that 39-54 million Americans have had the flu from last october thru this March. This is with 50.4% ages 6 months- 17 years old, 34.2% of 18-49 year olds, 46.8% of 50-64, and 68.7% of over 65 year olds getting a flu shot in the past 12 months. Now consider that the R0 of covid19 is greater than the flu's with no natural antibodies and no vaccine. I say all that to say these players will most likely get covid19 whether they play or not, and so will you and I.

That's really not even an issue either. The real issue is players getting it and spreading it to at risk groups. Kids and wives in the vast majority of cases are at less risk than the athletes.

Can we keep the discussion of the virus to the other boards. Let’s keep this to actual baseball talk.

The whole reason we're discussing this is because of the Snell news that came out today. It's part of the discussion. Pointing out that Snell is plainly wrong is important. I'm honestly surprised I'm getting push back from it. Maybe I'm not clear what I mean when I saw virtually zero risk.

You can without getting into the “there’s zero risk to players” vs the “everyone is going to catch it and get really sick” argument.

Is the "...get really sick" me? I never said that. In fact, I'm totally opposite of that. Look at bledsoe co correctional complex (tenn) stats... 583 of the 2322 staff and inmates tested positive. Of the 583 positives, 98% were asymptomatic.
