MLB Pipeline Top 100 released:

Wait a second - I thought FanGraphs was the "be-all, end-all" source for prospects...well, them and Keith Law.

Generally they are far more accurate with their grading than BA or Pipeline, but they are made up of individuals. Farnsworth left Fangraphs over two years ago and its the only time I can recall an article on Fangraphs being so ridiculous. But Fangraphs does have bad articles from time to time, the recent Kiley article about scouts being one of them.

I just went back and looked at Fangraph's top Braves prospects list from Dan Farnsworth in 2015, and it is still just as hilariously bad as it was back then. I can't believe that someone got paid to say that John Gant was a 60 FV prospect and Ryan Weber was a 55 hahaha

He was probably the worst prospect guy to ever draw a paycheck

I think there is a tendency to look at how many guys each team has and if people are on the bubbLe the evaluators will say the braves have 8 alreadg. They don't need more guys at the end of the list.

There may be a bit of truth to this. These prospect lists need to draw eyeballs, so if there’s a guy on a team with few (or zero) Top 100 guys who is ranked 120, there’s no real harm in putting him at #95.

This is why I prefer to value prospects based on their FV grades. There are usually ~150 guys rated at 50+ (Not counting pipeline 50s haha) so a Top 100 is a completely arbitrary cut off.

Agree on Senzel, but Wright would have been my number 1 pick regardless of who was on the board. I’d have taken Gore over Lewis as well.

Where Lewis is ranked now has little to do with anything other than what was thought about him when he was drafted.

Could say the same about Wright, but Wright has been tested at higher level.

Braves would have rather have had senzel too per the braves.

I'd forgotten about that set of player rankings. And to think that for all of its ludicrousness, it caused debate on the board. It somehow had defenders.

i remember the comments on that article. they got mean, but it was truly the most absurd list i've ever seen. the guy clearly had no clue about the braves' system.

There may have been some defenders, but my memory was that pretty much everyone here said "Ryan Weber... Really?"

Yeah, I largely remember it being 95% jokes and 5% saying "at least he's giving a different perspective..." No real defenses of Gant and Weber being that high.

I agree, but what struck me was the ardor with which the defenders of the list argued its legitimacy.

Let's review some quotes about Weber, starting with my stance...

I stopped reading right there because...well...frankly, it completely invalidates any other baseball related opinion you will ever have.

How many times must we watch mediocre pitchers with mediocre stuff have a few decent starts and then turn back to being replacement level before people stop saying stupid stuff like this? It wasn't long ago when folks were pimping Williams Perez as the next great control artist success story...and look how that turned out.

Weber will be lucky to be throwing pitches at the MLB level 2 years from now. He isn't even similar to a competent MLB starting pitcher, much less Greg Freaking Maddux.

What was I replying to? How about this gem...

Let us break it down.

Weber looks legit to me, similar in some ways to a Greg Maddux.

A couple more...

I like Weber! Good stuff.

The radar gun genius chimed in...

Could Weber actually be a starter for us next year? He looks good so far.

However, to our credit, by the time the FG list came out literally NOBODY agreed with it:

The best thing anyone said was along the lines of, "well it's nice to see different takes on the system".

At least I didn't come up with a ton of off-season conspiracy theories. LOL!

That list was questionable as is, but the fact that Farnsworth went back and edited his list due to fan backlash was truly damning and removed any semblance of authority he may have had before that.

FWIW, I think Farnsworth has some credibility at evaluating hitting mechanics which is why I’m sure FG had him fill in for Kiley after he left. He wasn’t just a random dude who put together a weird list.

Oh my... Someone in that thread said that they thought Willians Astudillo was a potentially great piece... I now know that no matter how bad I become at prospect evaluation, I will never be the worst in the world.

It wasn't the payroll, dummy. It was all the other stuff. Hilarious!

You mean the part where I said attendance and revenue were below projections and would lead to a lower payroll in 2018?

Or the part where I said there was a major rift in the FO between the dinosaurs and the dorks?

Or the part where I said Hart threw Coppy under the bus in an effort to save his own ass?

What exactly was I wrong about?
