MLB Trade Deadline Discussion

Hamels may not have the Braves or the Gnats on his no-trade list, but you can bet that the Phillies would try and squeeze them for all they can get, just because of the divisional rivalry. Looking at that list of teams, I'd have to rate the Dodgers and Angels as favorites, mainly for the fact he's a California native. Cardinals would get in on it as well.

As far as Peavy goes, I can see the reasoning for the interest. There are question marks in the rotation right now. I know a bigger need is bench and a lefty reliever, but rotation is something the Braves need to at least look at. That said, if I had to choose a Red Sox pitcher the Braves needed more right now, it's Andrew Miller.

I think Peavy is done as a pitcher. I'd rather see about Lackey than Peavy and I believe lackey has a team option for '15 so his contract would be expiring as well.

Would rather have Cliff Lee if were actually serious about trading for one of them. I doubt we are.

From MLB Trade Rumors:

6:31pm: Cardinals GM John Mozeliak says that the team believes it would need to give up one of its own starters to get a “top starter” in return, resulting in a net loss of years of control, tweets Goold.

6:06pm: The Cardinals are “looking for offense not Peavy” right now, reports Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (via Twitter). Goold says there is no match with Boston, given that Joe Kelly is expected to return to the rotation in short order.

I have a feeling David Price isn't going anywhere.

He's been making the rounds to the media with his "this is the best I've ever felt on the mound with control. The best I've ever had command on the mound" speak. Sounds like Tampa wants to bump up his value and he wants to as well to he the highest target.

I don't really see the fit for either team, especially not the Nats. That move wouldn't make sense for them.

Plus, Hamels is a west coast softie, Angels probably perfect fit.

I think we need Peavy (or someone like him) next year, so I wouldn't be against trading for him if he agreed to sign for another 2-3 years (cheap). I don't want to see the team going into 2015 depending on Medlen and/or Beachy returning. Wood and Teheran are also going to be on the injury watch list (especially Teheran).

Would be completely idiotic to trade for Peavy unless we gave up Uggla for him. We could use some starting pitching help, but not someone who's been bad.

Boston DFA A.J. Pierzynski.

They are turning the page. Five rookies in the lineup tonight.

In retrospect last year showed that any decent team can catch lightning in a bottle. They were far from a great team, though with Ellsbury in center and batting leadoff clearly better than this year's version. They looked unstoppable at times last year. But nothing is inevitable in baseball. Any decent team can go on a nine game winning streak.

DOB is talking up lefty reliever Andrew Miller of Boston. Guy is 29, averaging 14 Ks per 9 innings.

I would love to get Andrew Miller. Wonder what Boston would need in return.

Probably a little more than the Diamondbacks got back for Joe Thatcher. But not a lot more.

They got two second-tier prospects, Zared Borenstein and Joey Krebiel. Hard to say who would be comparable in our system. Maybe Terdoslavich and Cornely. Something like that.

We should be able to get a decent lefty pen arm (maybe not quite of Miller's caliber) for a couple second-tier prospects. We have pieces that should interest other teams. We have some areas of surplus. Middle infielders (Pena, Pastornicky, Gosselin, Reyes, Castro), fourth outfielder types (Schafer, Constanza, Cunningham, Hunter, Mycal Jones), back end of the rotation/long relief types (Hale, Martin, Schlosser, Northcraft, Williams Perez). I think we'll deal from those areas of surplus.

I would try not to deal someone like Peraza or even Kubitza or Wren who could be an upgrade over someone currently starting at the major league level.

Consider the A.L. East right now:

The Blue Jays have gone cold
The Orioles have a suspect rotation.
The Red Sox offense is not good and they may trade both Peavy and Miller.
The Yankees have lost Sabathia for the year and now Tanaka is on the D.L.

The Rays are a hot streak away from being right back into the thick of the race in that division. Two weeks ago, I thought the chances of David Price being dealt was 75%. Now, I think it's 50%, at best.
