MLB Trade Deadline Discussion

We've heard some names of lefty relievers that the Braves are looking at. The SPs available are pretty well known. Does anyone know or care to speculate about what kind of bench bats we may be looking at?

Maybe we could keep Shreve and acquire Joe West at the deadline.

I mentioned Luis Valbuena in a pre-ASB game thread. I like him.

I would really like to have him but he isn't going to straight platoon with Johnson at 3rd, and I think someone will go and get him to give him steady ABs. So we'd have to pay too much, because we won't have the steady ABs for him. He's a good enough player to play against righties (don't think he hits lefties at all).

I'm not sure how much the Cubs are really going to be able to squeeze out of us for Luis Valbuena. If some other team with a hole at third or second calls up and Chicago tries to instigate a bidding war, sure, you have to avoid that. Valbuena isn't worth that.

But I'm a big believer in the idea that championship teams tend to have role players who are slightly over-qualified for their positions. I think about the 2001 Diamondbacks team that used Erubiel Durazo, Greg Colbrunn and David Delucci as pinch hitters when all could have easily handled platoon arrangements at least. Valbuena gives us some pop and patience off the bench, and insurance at a couple positions.

We won't platoon him with Johnson, but he lets us sit CJ down against really tough righties from time-to-time, and he's a good security blanket should La Stella hit the rookie wall.

I mentioned this before, but perhaps if they trade with the Cubs for one of their lefties, either Wright or Russell, maybe they could get Ruggiano thrown in there, although the addition for the bench would likely take Pastornicky's place, so it probably would have to be a middle infield type.

I agree. I liked what the Rockies did a few yrs ago in acquiring Giambi for the stretch run. He was pretty huge for them off the bench.

I wouldn't mind Chris Young (the OFer) to stick on the bench as a power bat who can play all the OF positions. I imagine he could had for very little.

I completely agree with all of this. Solid post.
It comes down to cost of course. I hope it happens, and I'd prob be willing to give up more than most.

I think he'd be a solid addition and wouldn't require us to pay a prohibitive cost. We have some decent minor league arms in AAA who project to be back-end rotation or mid-level bullpen guys and one of them may suffice.

Speaking of the Cubs, someone mentioned Ruggiano as a possible fit for us and I was wondering where Coghlan fits (if he does) in the Cubs' long term plans.

The Cubs have a nice set of complementary/supplementary players who would look nice on the benches of contending teams. I'm thinking guys like Valbuena, Bonifacio, Ruggiano, Coghlan, and Sweeney. If Theo plays his cards right, he can probably get a few decent prospects for these guys.

We could get Venters back still. He is scheduled to resume mound work.

I don't think there is any chance. The time table is much longer for 2nd TJ and they will not rush him even if he feels good. He has also been dealing with lingering soreness last I heard. For a second TJ you're also probably looking at multiple weeks and possibly months of rehab assignments.

Take it for what its worth,

#Braves, #Orioles, #Mariners, #Cubs, #Nationals also have top evaluators present for Price-Lester.

Let's remember, the Braves also like Andrew Miller from the Red Sox, so they could be there to see him.

Giants are getting Peavy from Boston. Not sure what Boston is is getting in return. Sounds like two minor league pitchers
