MONDAY MINORS FINAL 5/7/18: Riley, others on move; Javier finds morning glory

Pretty much what everyone in this thread is saying.

Right, and I guess my point is just, chill a bit. Not every top draft pick, or every future stud pitcher, lights the world on fire in the minors right away. It's ok.

If we make a big trade Wright is the one I would trade if he is still valued highly. But I never really like college starters. I bet he makes a good closer someday.

I really don't want to trade anyone but that just isn't realistic. There is one GLARING need moving forward and that is LF. That should be filled with FA cap space and there is one guy out there that would fit that role perfectly.

Look at what happened to Seattle. They traded Gohara too early and his value skyrocketed. Wright could end up finishing the year strong and then our thoughts on trading him completely change.

Ultimately whats going to happen is that Teheran/Folty/McCarthey will not be in the rotation long term. Teheran may last until the end of 2019 because we owe him that money. Therefore you have two spots that need to be filled. One of those spots is going to be Allard IMO. Then it will come down to a battle of Gohara/Fried/Wright/Touki (may take it slow with him but he is certainly changing the discussion).

This is a bit of an odd move. Gohara has barely been stretched out to handle a starter's workload this year. Moving him to the BP now means he will need another 3-4 weeks minimum to build up the pitch count to be a starter if/when the team needs him, unless this is a promotion intended to only be a week or so in duration.

Moving prospects to the BP typically happens at the end of the season to limit innings, not early.

Even more odd if the report on his velocity was correct last week.

I think this is just more about AA using the shuttle and getting fresh arms in as well as monitoring Gohara due to his high workload last year.

You also think the Braves should sign Harper AND Markakis this off season, so....yeah.

I'll look for hot takes elsewhere. Thanks though.

I think this may be one area where theory and reality do not jive.

Gohara has a weight issue. He has been rumored to have some history with substance abuse (alcohol). He may have some motivation issues. The Braves may feel it is better to get him up to bigs where he is engaged and they can monitor him better. Bus riding with per deim for McDonalds may not be the best for this guy. Get him up and monitor what he does and what he eats.

I think he's too volatile and risky an asset to look to extend. Even if he pitches like he did last year.

I had a similar thought to this. There have been really distressing stories published about his emotionally difficult winter and he came to camp understandably not in a good place and then got hurt. It may be a situation where the team is trying to keep him close in hand.

man, it would be so nice if he were pitching like he did last year. but then again, that's the known risk with pitchers.

Gohara had his spot snagged by Soroka.

Moving him to pen suggests they are good with Teheran, McCarthy, Folty, Newcomb, and Soroka for the time being. If Gohara is in the pen, you do wonder if Sanchez will be released or if he's willing to stay at AAA or he moves someone else out the MLB pen.

Great point

It's hard to say with the way AA plays musical chairs with the pitching staff. We knew this was going to be the plan as soon as AA was hired though.

I have a hard time agreeing that letting Gohara sit in the BP getting 3-4 innings per week in May is a good development plan for him though. At the end of the season to limit inning? Sure.

I expect to see him moved back to the AAA rotation before he no longer has the endurance to throw 60+ pitches.

Soroka, allard, and gohara (last season) spoiled us

I think that's a huge part of it. I also don't think anyone seems "worried" about Wright - certainly not at this point. It's really just the situation he's in and all the other things going on around him right now.

I'm definitely not in any hurry to trade him at all, but given the success of several others combined with the overall situation of the franchise, I'd think you have to at least listen if someone values him REALLY highly and wants him bad enough. That wouldn't include including him in any kind of rental deal (Machado or Donaldson unless they were going to agree to an extension), but if you could get another controllable "answer" for him (Verdugo or Dustin Fowler to fill the open OF spot perhaps) you'd then be in a position to throw money at Donaldson to top the lineup off this winter if you so choose. Some mixture of Ozzie, Acuna, Freddie, Donaldson, Verdugo/Fowler, Catcher TBD, Dansby/Camargo, and Ender would be pretty tough.

I don't see Verdugo as a likely trade by any stretch, but if the Dodgers plan to be in the Harper sweepstakes it might not be completely nuts. Mainly just that where Wright would have been one of those that I'd considered "off-limits" in the past that I'm not sure anyone that hasn't logged a little time on the MLB roster at this point actually fits that description since Albies, Acuna, and Soroka are up now.
