Black Panther was pretty awesome.

What will be interesting is first where will it go, the recovery of the stuff that makes you the Black Panther will be a part of the future and probably tie to GotG or something celestial. Now that Disney owns XMen again we now can get adamantium into the mix.

I'm thinking the Soul Gem is somehow involved. I believe it being there is why it looks like a major part of the battle in Infinity War is in Wakanda. It's the last infinity gem for Thanos to get.

Also now that Disney has the X-Men we will get the BP and Storm wedding.
 
Jazz trumpet great Lee Morgan was shot and killed by his wife 46 years ago tonight in a club called Slug, in NYC. He played in one of my favorite jazz bands, Art Blakely and the Jazz Messengers.

Here's an awesome documentary on Lee and his wife called "I Called Him Morgan".

Absolutely. Horace Silver, too.

Hard Bob should probably be called Soft Bop. Coming after the Bebop era it returned to traditional melodies and rhythms, and thus, less bebop. I think the theme of Sister Sadie comes right from Lester Flatt's famous G run, but who knows. Same lick, though.

Life in 12 Bars, the Clapton documentary is surprisingly good. I thought I already knew everything about him, but it turns out I knew very little.

I've seen five of them - Dunkirk, Darkest Hour, Three Billboards, Get Out and The Post. Fine with any of them winning but it would be nice to finally see Nolan honored.
 
I'm glad Dunkirk won some awards. But I want Nolan to win an award that recognizes him or his wife because they're an amazing pair. At the very least, Lee Smith should have the editing locked down. he's been putting in amazing work for years and the way Dunkirk was edited was truly brilliant.

Partially true. Saw the movie and Oldman did a good job, but I have to believe that the transformation through prosthetics and make-up--and it is a magnificent transformation--played a part in the voters' decisions. There's been kind of a Churchill revival lately. The New York Review of Books had a great article on the various portrayals of Churchill on the big and small screens recently. I didn't see the Chalamat or Day-Lewis movies, but this set of nominees didn't look particularly strong. Day-Lewis' oeuvre speaks for itself and he would have probably nabbed a nomination for reading the phone book (do they still have phone books?).

I haven't seen The Shape of Water and I probably won't. I heard an interview with del Toro and he basically described the movie as Creature from the Black Lagoon with a happy ending. I've always respected del Toro's ability to create resplendent visuals, but I've never really enjoyed his story-telling.
 
The Shape of Water is great. Funny how people can’t get over a love story between a creature and a mute girl, but somehow the story of surgically putting white people into black people doesn’t raise any eyebrows. (This is coming from someone who really enjoyed Get Out).

This year didn’t have a bonafide slam dunk Best Picture, but there were a ton of great A- movies.
