Dont' know how I feel about that. Hobbit was already gratuitously violent considering it's source material. And IMO was more gratuitously violent than the LOTR. I'm waiting for the extended trilogy to come out. Because I still even if I don't love the movies, love the universe.

Wait you mean each Hobbit movie is being released to R standard, or is Jackson taking elements from all 3 and trimming them into one R-rated movie?

I know people poop on the Hobbit movies, but I actually found them entertaining. There were some ridiculous things (like the Dwarves and the barrels in the river being more ridiculous than Legolas taking down the giant Pirate Elephant in ROTK), but overall the main negative I had of it was the modern overuse of CGI. Loved the practical Orukhai costumes in the LOTR trilogy, the CGI just went south and took away.

I'm actually anticipating this movie a little more than Star Wars and Spectre (new Bond film).

 
I posted the trailer on some other page here. It's so amazing looking. It has the potential, depending on the results.

That or Hardy wins Best supporting.
 
Well the Cinematographer is the same guy who's worked with Terrence Malick, and has done Tree of Life and Children of Men recently.

He's also the same one who had Birdman as well. And he did Gravity.

I love the potential of the film. To me it has a very There Will be Blood feel to it. Where it's all about 1 character. I know Hardy is supposed to have a pretty big role as well. But it still seems to mainly be about Leo. If Leo can control the screen, this will be his best effort to win it IMO. But this is also the year the Fassbender may have a great shot too. As he'll be in Macbeth.

I'm excited for it, but—like I said up-thread—I'm ultimately disappointed Park Chan-wook didn't see the chance to adapt the material.

I also agree with with zeets that Dicaprio will receive a strong challenge from Fassbinder: that forthcoming Macbeth adaptation looks very promising. I've been keeping an eye on it, since Marion Cotillard could convince me to murder sleep, the innocent sleep, sleep that knits up the ravell'd sleeve of care, the death of each day's life, any single day of the week.

It looks fantastic, and you know he is going to nail the role. When is the last time he didn't? But I doubt he'll win.

It is a bit ironic that 2/3 pictures where Leo received a Best Actor nomination were directed by the also-non-winning Martin Scorcese. I can't figure out why DiCaprio was nominated for Blood Diamond when some of his other work has been overlooked. My guess is he'll win someday and maybe it's this time around. I think one of the things that works against him is that he takes on some pretty heavy roles that aren't particularly audience-warm.
 
Saw Everest the other night. It cured me of any desire to go mountain climbing. Harrowing story that is put together for the screen pretty well. You get a real sense of the physical and mental challenge of the effort.

Go see it friends. I hadn't read about it or even knew about it, but saw a 10 second spot. Benicio Del Toro steals the show.

It has the best elements of Zero Dark Thirty, Traffic, No Country for Old Men, and True Detective in one.
 
It was The Martian this weekend. Good movie. Quality science fiction because there is science involved and not simply fantasy. Of course, it's a bit far-fetched, but it's a good night at the movies.

Agreed, really well done. You see most of the stuff coming, not all of it but it doesn't matter because it's so well done.

Saw the Martian tonight. It's overall a good movie.

I have a small quip without giving away too much. I'd think Solar Technology would have improved a lot more than it did in the movie before we landed on Mars.

In a bit I'll post a spoiler section with my more detailed thoughts, but overall it's worth it. It's kind of attempting to be like Interstellar bridged with Gravity and it succeeds in many ways. I enjoyed it much more than I enjoyed Gravity (which I think is massively overrated) but much less than I did Interstellar which I think was a much more scientifically sound movie, not that I have a massive scientific background, and they're both dealing with largely theoretical physics and math.

I think what it did really well was keep everything lighthearted. It wasn't even remotely as serious as Gravity or Interstellar. You had moments where you laughed, but you also understood the pain and the struggles of everyone involved.

I think it's just the 3rd of the Hobbit movies that got an R rating with the extended edition. It's mainly because most of the extra scenes are in the big battle and apparently the violence pushed it over the edge. But all 3 are coming back to certain theatres for a special screening.
