They could have just cut those players and used the stretch provision for not that much of a difference and still kept their assets. It was a terrible move.
They would still have to pay Landry and Thompson just at a pro rata basis plus an additiona year. Why does that make sense?
They are trying to free cap space and by doing that they woudl free cap space while still keeping assets for another move. Its clear they didn't NEED the cap space immediately.
