Netflix CEO: Broadcast TV Will Be Dead By 2030

We will end up paying more for individual channels if it's broken up than we do now.

Broadcast TV will outlast Netflix, IMHO.

Sports will Always need to be shown live. That's what Netflix can't do.

yet

edit:

I'd imagine that each individual sport will have their own channel of streaming live sports....can you imagine something like an MLBTV?

Casual fans aren't going to buy mlb.tv and then buy the nfl package and then buy this sports package, that sports package.

could happen. But that would be mighty expensive

Why not? Have the teams individually sell game packages in the same vein as local TV. MLB.TV is covering all games for all teams os that's why it's expensive. Imagine buying a package of just braves games from 40 bucks a season. You don't think people would do that instead of spending 60 bucks a month for cable?

I've always said, someone is missing out on a ton of money if they would just start letting you pay for cable a la carte. Have an a la carte package where for 30 bucks a month, you choose any 50 channels that aren't premium, like HBO, Cinemax, Playboy, etc. Premium channels can be charged the same they are now. You offer an affordable rate of the channels people actually want, instead of the 100+ channels they offer now for $50+/month that people barely watch half the channels they have.

Well the issue with a la carte is the death of some cool channels. ANd you'll find channels you watch now you may not want, I forget what someoen said the monthly cost of ESPN was but it's insane.

A la Carte on the surface is an awesome idea, but I'm sure it would just jack prices up even more. Cable companies are ridiculous, especially here where I live, where Comcast is pretty much it. Thought about Direct TV, but their hidden fees made it just as bad as Comcast.

I love Hastings' entrepreneurial spirit (although it sidles up to hubris here), but I don't think anyone can honestly say what technology will be available in 2030 and how that will affect our viewing habits. Google will probably have planted chips in our heads by that time and we'll be able to watch what we want through our Google glasses. I'll almost be 80 then, so I hope my drooling doesn't short out the chip.

Seriously, I think there is going to be a lot of ala carte options, which will probably drive prices down in the short term, but probably up in the long term.

I wont give a damn because I'll be doing this by 2030.

I really want to get rid of cable, but I watch too many games on non espn channels to give it up.
