NFL Draft Thread

Yeah, they need to hit on two more of their draft picks (talking about good starting players) to get there this year.

Matthews is gonna be a hit. Kid is too good to fail as long as he's healthy. Worst case scenario for him if he's healthy is seeming being an above average LT. He lacks the upside of Robinson or Lewan, but his floor is way higher and he's more ready to impact now than either of them.

I really like the pick. He wasn't the guy (or any of the group of guys) I wanted at 16, but he's a really good OL who can play G or T. I see the left side of our line being solidified now for the next 7 or 8 years. Had Barr or Donald been there that's who I wanted, but with both of them gone, and even the WR out of LSU gone (he was the other main "I don't really want him because we need DL/DE types" but he's the BPA at the time) I was totally fine with it and even more totally fine it WASN'T JM. I was really happy for the kid that he went to Cleveland, I think he'll love it there if he plays even half way decent but I definitely didn't want him in Dallas and I was really concerned, knowing Jerry, that's what was about to happen.

Tonight I want Crichton, Lawrence, Jernigan, or another quality DL/DE in round 2 and hopefully another one of those in round 3. I think all the best safeties are gone so if we take one of those it'll have to be an "under the radar" type.

I must say, I don't understand this sentiment. When has Jerry ever made a pick like picking Manziel? He has not historically made outrageous picks like that. I'm no fan of his in general, but this was cooked up by media to make it seem like Jerry was strongly considering it when I promise you he wasn't. There was never a chance of us taking JFF there.

I would have preferred to go defense at 16, Clinton-Dix was sitting there, but some have their reservations about him so I understand not taking him. No other great defensive player was there with Barr/Donald gone, so building on the OL is never bad. Always need depth, and even though ours was solid last year, it would have regressed if we didn't improve it. Martin will likely start right away. Smith/Martin/Fredrick is a solid foundation on the line, and all super young.

I posted that with the assumption that Matthews will be a solid player. Falcons still need more. They can't rush the QB or protect the QB AND their running game is awful. Not to mention the cumulative strength of their weapons is diminishing.

Why do you keep saying Harry Douglas as a 1000 yard wide receiver as some sort of vindication that Ryan is great?

Because Harry Douglas is a terrible WR who was put into the 1 spot, Despite generating top corner cover and being a very bad route runner, Ryan was able to get the ball into his hands. In order to do that you have to have top level accuracy and reading abilities.

Seriously, Harry Douglas is a fine slot WR, but when he's the best WR on th efield and he's still getting catches despite not being covered by a S/Nickel corner, that speaks to the abilities of your QB. Similar to like Brady did with Edelman, but of course Brady is way better than Ryan.

Zeets, Ryan threw the ball the second most times in the NFL and Douglas was his only viable receiver outside of Gonzalez. Of course he is going to get 1000 yards.

I would like a depth OL pick in the 3rd or 4th to get another OT. I really don't like Holmes, it was a bad risk pick for the Falcons to go with someone on physical ability not actual size. But the Falcons OL now is pretty solid. Only C and Baker are question marks and Baker is a fine OT when healthy. Only other question with him is do they move him to RT because he gets beat out by Matthews in a battle, or do they keep him at LT for now for stability sake?

Some names I like for the Falcons in round 2, also wouldn't mind a trade back of a few picks assuming some of these guys are gone,

Kony Ealy - Aside from Kony probowl jokesI'll be able to get lulz off of, Big, strong, fast kid who probably is best slated as a 4-3 DE but shouldn't have issues in a 3-4 as either an pass rushing DE on extreem passing downs or everydown at 3-4 rush

Xavier Su'a Filo - Probably not wise to draft for depth early on when a starter could be on the board, but the kid is a very good OL who can play guard or tackle, would help if the Falcons get wrecked by injuries and inconsistent play. WHo knows maybe he could slide to center if Konz sucks again?

Stephon Tuitt - Already discussed, wouldn't be a starter most likely but a logn term replacement should slot nicely as a 3-4 DE or 4-3 DT or 4-3 run stopping DE.

Demarcus Lawrence - Kind of like Ealy, more of a 4-3 DE but as long as he's willing to learn, should succeed standing up.

Van Noy - Mentioned earlier, not a perfect fit short term, but long term would be the drop LB in Atlanta.

Crimson, whats the deal with that OL from Bama? Hearing reports that his knees are just fine. If so, solid pick by Skins in 2nd round.

I'm looking at him, Nix, or Hageman

There's nothing given about that. Ryan could have easily seen a massive drop in completion % because his man wasn't open. He already had a giant rise in INTs because of forcing throws being down, and bad receivering.

The demise of the Falcons was greatly exageratted, they had some big holes cause the OL shat the bed, and Osi was not an adequate replacement for Abe, but they ditched their dead weight this offseason, found some good talented players who should be long term impacts defensively, and they used their offseason to get bigger and nastier on the OL and DL. Falcons may surprise a lot of teams with their looks this season. I expect them to run more and be more successful doing so.

Did you guys sign another RB?

Am I crazy to think that Cleveland is going to be a playoff team next year?

Not really, the NFC North is not a particularly strong division. I doubt they will this year, since Manziel likely won't be starting and still learning. I see the Browns as a long term success

Glad Bucs got Evans. Him and Jackson will be a dynamic 1-2 punch. NFC south is filthy.

And that's the hardest part about the Falcons success, the NFC South and NFC West are probably the toughest divisions in the NFL. NFC North being in the mix as well. If $cam takes the next step as a QB the South will be the best division.

Atlanta needs Demarcus Lawrence and a FS, and take McKinnon in the 4th. Jmac could unseat Rodgers immediately.

Could get behind that, but with the run on safeties at the end of the first, I have to wonder if there will be a quality one in the 3rd? If no one makes another run, one of Bailey or Reynolds should be there.Don't know if either of them will be good enough to start. I think it's time to hope that Zeke Motta lives up to his projectability.

I think the Rams and Browns did quite well for themselves.

Not a fan of the Ebron pick. But it should present some match up problems for defenses. There weren't any defensive players worthy of the #10 pick, except Donald - but that would have been another luxury pick

I think the Lions wanted Barr at 10, Vikings kinda ruined that. I'm still surprised they didn't trade up to 5 for Evans. I thought once Watkins left they would have made a jump move.
