Nikki Haley To Call For Confederate Flag To Be Removed From South Carolina Capitol:

Been reading a lot of comment saying taking down the flag wont solve racism.
I agree it won't "solve" racism

But what it will do is start chipping away at it.
Kinda like racism has a 7 run lead in the 2nd inning. No one is going to hit a 7 run homer to erase the lead. But a run here and a run there - by the 8th we have a ball game again.

Really is sad that it took a racist white guy to kill 8 black people in a church for all of these politicians in South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi to finally do something about that flag.

It's almost shameful they waited for something like this to take action when the flag has been flying high for many years.

i agree

rahm emanuel caught a lot of **** from conservatives for saying the following quote but he was spot on

"You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it's an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before."
 
Nobody commented on the old Bill Clinton / Hilary Clinton confederate campaign buttons from prior campaigns... I'm shocked

I read that they weren't officially sanctioned (don't know if that's been debunked yet or not).

I'd say virtually any step is more substantial (impactful/meaningful/lasting) than removing the flag itself.

We've got to do a little more than sit around patting each other on the back when we haven't even remotely started to address the reasons why people have fought over the flag for like 50 years

But to answer your question more directly: for a start, a renewed focus on community building. This is where it all begins.

Well - you can't legislate morality. Racism will continue to die off as more and more generations meet their maker

You can't legislate morality but how long would it have taken for the free market to have legislated itself on "no blacks allowed"?

Free market seems to be the driving force behind most of the social change happening in this pressure. Look at LGBT
 
I am all for a renewed focus on community building, which IMO actually starts with some fundamental changes in how we live—not so much on hot-button social issues, but in building liveable, sustainable communities, which means (in somewhere like, say, Charleston) having communities where people of every class and in every social strata have access to food, transportation, and employment. Dis-incentivizing sprawl goes a long way towards this end. Incentivizing folks to live, and work, and go to school alongside one another is a good start. Next, we look at the way law enforcement approaches these communities. Good community planning and good policing are some pretty crucial parts of the equation.

I'm gonna say, though, that as far as I'm concerned, this strange spasm of doing the right thing with regard to the flag is actually advancing the ball further down the field than you might be crediting.

Well, the good news is that the racist white dude got pretty much the exact opposite reaction he was hoping to get.
