Shoulder issues generally are much much more severe than arm problems, not always but most of the time. The success rate of someone coming back from TJ is pretty darn good after rehab with a few hiccups while a minor should injury could be a career devestating event....example Tommy Hanson.

It used to be the other way around. Graham had a lot of ups and downs in 2014 and would have these starts where he couldn't make it out of the first inning. Don't know the reason why, but there's no question his setbacks have eroded his prospect status and that's why the Braves made him available.

Don't know much about Winkler. He does take up a roster spot, but I wonder if he can be placed on the 60-day DL almost immediately, which would open up a spot on the 40-man roster.

Not surprised that no one ventured a chance on Cody Martin.
 
It hurts to lose Graham, but I'm glad we kept Martin. I think he's going to surprise a lot of people.

My understanding is that you can't put anyone on the 60-day DL until spring training or thereabouts. It sounds like the Braves are really high on Michael Kohn (who's on a minor league deal), so one way to think about this is that Kohn will just take Winkler's spot once he's DL'd . . . assuming Kohn heads north.

The Braves are looking at a definite 40-man roster crunch. Guys like Pastornicky and Jaime are close to dead-man-walking status at this point. If they end up trading Justin and / or Evan in a move that brings back more than one player, they'll likely be seeking prospects that don't need to be on the 40-man as part of the return.

Thanks. There is big-time crunch, especially if you consider that if Gattis and J. Upton are traded, they would likely bring back multiple players and if those players have to be placed on the 40-man roster, someone will have to be dropped. Like you said, there are a number of likely candidates (Jaime, Pastornicky, Reyes, Constanza) that could be dropped to accommodate additional players who would need to be on the 40-man.

For some reason, I think Cunniff is safe. I wondered why the sent him to the Arizona Fall League, but looking at his stats, he's done very well since the Braves signed him. Of course, stats are only two-dimensional, but there must be something he's doing that our personnel guys really like.

I've always debated with myself on the differences between Rule V and DFA-ing a guy. Obviously, the 25-man roster thing is a hurdle in conjunction with the Rule V, but on a straight waiver/DFA claim, the guy would have to go on someone else's 40-man or become a free agent if clearing that process (or accept the assignment after clearing waivers). A lot of this depends on timing and the status of other folks' 40-man rosters.

Of the guys I mentioned, I simply cannot understand how Constanza merits a place on the 40-man roster. The other guys have at least some measure of value or growth potential.

3-2, 1.89, 11 starts, 67 IP, 56 H, 7 BB, 66 K,

Now this one:
7-6, 3.35, 22 starts, 126 IP, 117 H, 26 BB, 93 K

The first was YC Gil's first pro season at age 19. The second was his line with a horrible Rome team in 2014 after missing most of 2012 and the first half of 2013 with his TJ surgery. It looks to me like he's regaining his phenom form. But that's just me.

PS: He turned all of 24 this week.

This was my first thought when I read your post, too. Dude is 31 and a reasonable AAA hand, but why we'd protect him at the risk of losing a guy with any upside is beyond me.

Glad to hear that. I think he could be an effective groundball-inducing ROOGY. Though that role will apparently fall to Johnson in 2015. Assuming the manager has a good understanding of what Johnson brings to the table.
 
Indians sign RHP Gavin Floyd to one-year deal for $4 mil plus incentives. Would have like to seen him stick around; was apparently well-liked.

Yea, I liked Floyd. I know Wren made his mistakes but Floyd was a good signing IMO. It was just a shame he went down with injury again as he was pitching well for us.

Trea Turner, Joe Ross to Nats
Wil Myers, Ryan Hanigan, Jose Castillo to Pads
Steven Souza, Ott, Rene Rivers, Smith, Bauers to Rays

Actually a 3 team deal that makes sense for each of the 3 teams, though I think the Pads could end up with the worst of it. I really like Souza as a prospect and I think he will do very well in Tampa. The Nats trade an OF prospect (outfield is full with Taylor, Werth, Harper, Span) for a SS to possibly replace Desmond and a pitching prospect

It would not surprise me at all if Souza has a better year than Myers.
