Official 2017 Trade Deadilne Thread

Look, I don't know what went on behind the scenes, but it's pretty clear Melvin had to go. I'm not saying that makes it right that they attached him to Kimbrel. But I really don't think just keeping him and hoping for a rebound was an option. Every facet of his game was awful and I'd guess there were other problems.

I understand, but you simply cut him. Like Uggla, like HO (basically).

It's extremely close. I like Rutherford a lot, but he's disappointed so far, so not sure him alone puts them over the top. He dropped out of the top 50 prospects in the mid season lists.
Rutherford is #36 on BA's mid-season list. 3 spots behind Soroka and 5 ahead of Wright.

I'm getting jealous of how much better the White Sox farm system has gotten in the last 5 days while we just sit and wait for a unlikely WC chance berth.

Who are we gonna get significant pieces for? Johnson? Teheran at his low point? Almost certainly will have to package guys to get significant pieces

I think the Eaton deal at least looks bad. He was coming off a 6-fWAR year, and they got Giolito who's value has tanked even more and Lopez, who's value has also tanked. Eaton is cheap thru 2021. I think Lopez will be fine but Giolito is looking like Mark Appel a couple years ago.

It made sense at the time though and dont dismiss Dunning completely.

The issue, IMO, is you dont half rebuild. You go all the way or nothing. You cant "like" Freeman and JT and keep them. This team was too concerned with not being a 60 win team when moving into the new stadium.

The Eaton deal so far has turned out badly for both the White Sox and the gnats. I'm sure the gnats did not project he would get hurt and the Sox had higher expectations for Giolito and Lopez than what we have seen so far.

This raises an interesting question of how to evaluate a deal. It seems to me you have to look at it ex ante (partly because injuries and other random factors cannot be anticipated). However, I think injuries and random factors even out over the career of a GM if he sticks around for say 5 years or more. So while I would not judge a particular deal based on ex post results I am fine with judging the overall tenure of a GM with ex post results.

And what have the Yankees done?

Half rebuilding is what most teams do.

Five year tanking projects are mostly recent and rare.

Yup.. If Eaton doesn't come back the same, this is a disaster for the gNats. And I agree with Giles (yikes..).. Dunning is a very good prospect.

I also think it is fine to judge the process, but unfortunately the results are what you are ultimately judged on.

I don't think anyone is saying trade every single piece you have. However, holding on to a dream of playoff runs while subsequently being an obvious subpar team for the last few years is asinine.

The two farm systems are obviously now close. The White Sox get the edge on the top end because of Moncada and Jimenez, but the Braves still clearly beat them in depth. Giolito is essentially no longer a top 100 prospect, Fulmer has really disappointed, Lopez has been iffy, and Cease is 21 and still in A-ball.

If you're going top 10's, for Chicago it's something like:
Moncada
Jimenez
Robert
Kopech
Rutherford
Lopez
Cease
Giolito
Hansen
Collins

For the Braves:
Acuna
Albies
Allard
Wright
Maitan
Gohara
Soroka
Anderson
Pache
Wentz

I think the edge goes to Chicago for the top 10 overall at this point, but ours still skews quite a bit younger, and our system past the top 10 clearly beats theirs. So I think it's close, I think you can have an opinion on either side.

The Yanks are stupid, IMO. Well, in theory. Luckily, they didnt give up a ton for adding some bullpen arms.

If a team with Didi Gregarious batting 5th and a rotation with CC, Montgomery, and Tanaka can do anything significant, color me surprised.

The Cubs are scorching hot right now. And Newcomb hasnt even made 10 ML starts. And frankly i was kinda rooting for losses so Coppy doesnt do anything stupid at the deadline.

Isn't it kind of sad that our FO is so dumb that we have to hope for losses so they don't do something stupid that even fans would recognize as such?

yet this is dumb... Coppi is not going to sell anything for a win now move. That was never in his plan. he has said he is looking for controllable MLB talent (mostly pitching).. that is not going to change regardless if we win or lose for the next two weeks.
