Official 2017 Trade Deadilne Thread

Chris Cotillo on Twitter:

Braves scratched Aaron Blair from AAA start tonight, potentially to take the spot of Jaime Garcia in the rotation tomorrow night.

Wonder which of the 3 AAA gets the first crack. Tomorrow is just about getting a body in there. It will be interesting who gets the next start when this spot comes up.

One name that seems interesting on the Twins prospect list is Mitch Garver. Bat first Catcher.

As much as I'm one of the ones hot on trading for a SP, I can't see that happening for anything short of Archer, and they probably wouldn't even include all three if they could get him. If something crazy happened this winter and a package of say Anderson, Gohara, Pache, and Muller or Sanchez could land Archer, I could see them pulling the trigger. Then maybe packaging Julio and someone else to go get an impact bat. Archer/Folty/Dickey/Newcomb/Wisler or Sims ought to be enough to provide a competitive enough rotation until Wright and/or Soroka force their way into it. If that point comes late next season, we could be looking at an absolute lockdown pen if we're in contention and haven't traded pen pieces by then - can you imagine having to see Sims in the 6th, Newcomb in the 7th, Ramirez in the 8th, and Johnson in the 9th on one night followed by Krol in the 6th, Rivero in the 7th, Minter in the 8th, and Vizcaino in the 9th the next?

The further removed from a potential Quintana or Archer deal we get, the more I'm convinced our Top 6 guys are off-limits.

Teheran is going have to pitch a hell-of-a-lot better over the remainder of the season to net "an impact bat", even with his years of control and team-friendly contract.

As for the frequent bandying about of Gohara as a trade-piece: I really want to see, even if the odds aren't in his favor, if he can develop to his ceiling. I really liked Mallex Smith as a likely middle-tier contributor (what you'd call, in the NBA, a "good rotation piece"), but Gohara is one instance where the FO has a non-trivial shot to win big on a floor-versus-ceiling trade.

I'd be cool with Kirilloff, and my unrealistic fever dream is somehow getting Wander Javier. My actual bet is Kohl Stewart.

I think the highest ceiling guy that could be possible is Tyler Jay. Seems like the kind of guy we targeted in previous trades. Strong draft pedigree, but has struggled to establish himself.

That's probably a bit optomistic for Jaime tho.

The market for rental bats has been so soft, that I'm trying to keep my expectations pretty low. Will be interesting to see if the same applies for SPs though.

Probably wont happen but packaging 2 other players and getting a better return would seem smart instead of just trading 1 for 1. Maximize your assets.

Agreed, this is who I hoped they would get in return way back when I first identified the Twins as a viable trade partner. Probably need to include a BP piece with him to get Garver though. They are #28 in BP WAR, so could use Viz or JJ..or anyone with a pulse.

Harder to fill SP slots with effective starters. Easier to hide a hole in the batting order with a no bat guy. You can get effective defensive guys to give you some value there surrounded by strong offensive players. It's impossible to hide a bad starting pitcher.

Lol you'd be cool with a 50 FV prospect for Garcia?

If the Braves get him for Garcia I would be doing back flips.
