Official 2022 Offseason Moves Thread

If the report is true that the Braves offered 5/135, then it all it came down to was the 6th year since it’s the same AAV.

Considering California state taxes, I think this really came down to Freddie wanted to play close to family and the Braves would have to pay a premium to retain him.

I’m happy for Freddie. I’m glad we were able to move on and replace him with a better player.

And I think the failure comes from the fact that he’s going to sign for the same total money or less than what the Braves were offering. So, yeah, in that regard Freeman’s camp failed him.

I'm deeply skeptical of the claim that we offered six years and $180. The idea that we offered everything he asked for and then he just sat on the offer for a while, only to see us move on, leaving him in the lurch and forcing him to take less money, is just way too neat and tidy a morality play for real life.

The only thing we know is the 6th year was more important than being a Brave for life.

I suspect LA is where he wanted to be all along.

I tend to agree. We all know he's from SoCal and his social media during the offseason/lockout had a lot of pictures from that way. You can read into that what you will, but maybe that planted the seeds for him to go that way.

How? If they waited they could have had Freeman and all those prospects they traded to get Olson to overwhelm Pittsburgh to trade Reynolds. Maybe Freeman just wanted to be in California, but it's also possible we just unnecessarily dumped a bunch of prospects when we could have waited it out and signed Freeman the whole time.

They got the younger player for ~$5m less per season, and only have to pay him through age-35, not age-38—with a decent likelihood that they also got the player who will be more productive going forward.

I love Reynolds but they would have wanted more than we gave up for Olson. A lot more.

Agreed. I think it's highly unlikely the Pirates take the deal the A's took, for a host of reasons.
