Official 2022 Offseason Moves Thread

I love Freeman but there’s a point we shouldn’t go even for him. We need to be looking at repeating and staying competitive for the next 6-7 years while we have Acuna here. If he were in his 20’s it’d be a no brainer but at 32 I wouldn’t touch 30 million per and I’m sure AA feels the same way. I’m afraid McGuirk and other high ups tell him to do it anyways.

Make the tough decision and let him walk. Its going to hurt when he is top 10 MVP for the next 2 years.

Pujols started to go downhill at the same age.

Organization will be fine. First base is the easiest position to fill.

We could come close to getting Rizzo and Marte for what Freddie probably ends up getting.

Yup and while Rizzo is not Freeman at the plate he is still a tough out and can pick the ball at first base.

I think its time to say goodbye.

That is WAY too much money for a first basemen on the wrong side of 30.

Two years ago Anthony Rizzo was essentially Freddie’s equal offensively (.380+ wOBA, and very consistent year to year). Now he’s just squarely above average.

I’m fine with overpaying Freddie some, but I agree that letting him walk might end up being a huge blessing in disguise.

I think this is the perfect year to let Freddie go. He’s done everything there is to do with the Braves and his money can be better invested elsewhere going forward.

It’s odd to see a 5/130 offer mentioned so casually in an article by a writer who would have usually sent out a groundbreaking tweet the moment he heard that tidbit. However, that’s clearly too low for Freeman over 5 years by at least $10M, but at least it’s not a joke offer like the Astros offering Correa $160M….half his expected value.

If true, at least it tells us AA is willing to go 5 years. At that point $130M vs $140M makes almost zero difference. Not a fan of that type of deal, but I completely understand the motivations to make it happen.

What would your top offer be?

I don't think waiting should really cost the Braves more unless some kind of crazy bidding war happens which I just don't see. It's not like the QB position in the NFL where every year the price jumps based on what the previous QB signed his extension for. There are pretty set limits on what players like Freeman should earn. It's really going to come down to who offers the most years I think.

Yeah, I think that's right.

Anyone else think it's hilarious that Scott Boras thinks we got Joc, Soler, and Duvall because their teams were tanking? I mean, they were all three having such GREAT years and all. Pretty much the top trade targets available. *rolls eyes*

Not to mention that the Braves did EXACTLY what he is advocating for teams to do, and he is saying it only worked because of a broken system. lol

I’ve long stated 3/90 with an option is what I would pay for a 1B in his 30s.

However, I lack a lot of context and data AA has access to. Maybe they have analysis that shows he won’t age like a typical 1B. Maybe they have data that shows he benefits the club financially in some unique way. Maybe they know payroll will be $200M 3 years from now, so there’s plenty of room to overpay a declining 1B in the future.

We’ve all seen the data about aging guys at 1B, but the best chance to win for the next 2-3 years may very well be tied to the fact that it will hamper the chances to win in 2025 and beyond. If the plan is to take on a mini rebuild after Fried and Morton are gone anyways, maybe paying Freeman huge money in the last couple years of his deal while the team rebuilds isn’t so bad.

Not only that, their teams were largely terrible and the players were either impending free agents or had mutual options. I don't have that big a problem with Boras, but he's way off base here.

Give me Fried over Freeman all day every day.
