Official 2022 Offseason Moves Thread

Freeman has already signed the largest contract in Braves history when he got 8/135.

Assuming AA really offered 5/135, Freeman could have signed the 2 largest contracts in franchise history. Add a series of options that brings the guaranteed total to $140M+ and that’s as high as a team with the Braves payroll limitations should go.

If owning the 2 largest contracts in franchise history is not enough for the guy who supposedly wants to be a Brave, then he doesn’t really want to be a Brave for life. The Braves can’t hamstring their ability to build a competitive roster just to accommodate one “Brave for life”.

All of this

Yep. And here's part of what people seem to be missing. Smart teams pay players for their expected value during the life of the contract. They don't pay players based on what they've done in the years prior.

Freeman has earned the right to name his price. Not saying we should meet that price, but he got an MVP and a WS trophy for us, so he's reached the pinnacle of what he can do in Atl. Given that, I would not be surprised to see him chase the money. I imagine there's only 4 realistic landing spots, which is ATL, an LA team, or San Diego.

The LAD aren’t gonna go after FF imo. They have Buehler and Urias and that’s about it in the rotation right now. And Muncy is their 1b. I just don’t see the fit.

Muncy would be better DH. Dont forget Price. Dont forget MONEY> Having said that, Padres would be my idea of landing place.

Think it's a wee too early to say AA is considering moving on from Freddie. I think he wants Freeman but not at an insane price. Both sides in a game of chicken right now.

It's nowhere close to "too early" say that - unfortunately.

If Alex hasn't been mapping out potential scenarios for what he'll do if Freddie leaves for months, he's simply not doing his job. It can (and should) be "Plan B", "Plan C", and however many more there are, but if he didn't start mapping those out the day Freeman said he didn't want to negotiate DURING the season months ago Alex failed to do Job One for any GM - plan your next move if your star is no longer your star.

Having thought those out - and starting the wheels rolling on those options just in case - IS HIS JOB. It's absolutely the right thing to do to continue negotiating with Freeman if you think your fallback moves aren't close to disappearing, but if the fallback options start to come off the board and his reps are still floating crazy numbers like that out there you simply have to move on. It may not be time for drawing a line in the sand just yet, but he's in a position that if Freddie's reps have an offer like that from somebody then Alex needs to be talking to other players.

AA's certainly not going to negotiate in public - or let anyone know he's talking to other players - but if that's a "hard" number that Freeman's expecting, you can bet he's already told the agents there's nothing left to negotiate and that he can't go there.

I’d be surprised if AA hasn’t already talked to Oakland about Olson. He wouldn’t be cheap in prospects but he’s controllable for 2 more years. He’s from Atlanta so that would probably lessen the blow from the fans. We’d have the money to bring in Marte and probably Verlander to in that scenario.

Braves will not give away 2022 draft pick for Verlander. Plus to sign him is 20+ million contract.
We have a long season and Pache need to get more playing time to develop. Pache will make $500,000 next year. Marte is 33 and probably he want a multiyear contract.

We don’t need another Keuchel or Hamels.

Of course Marte will want a multi year deal, he’s good.

Aren’t you the one begging to resign Freeman? Bc he’s 32 and is gonna want a multi year deal.

They’d get a pick for losing Freeman, so it’d all balance out.

What are the acceptable backup plans to Freeman? We define acceptable as an .800+ OPS that includes a .350+ OBP, and the ability to play 1B competently? (Meaning we aren’t sticking Ozuna there in hopes he can sometimes field a grounder)

Rizzo on a 2-3 year deal.

A fairly large prospect package for Olson.

Maybe Belt if he rejects the QO?

Kyle Seager?

Canha?

Can Castellanos play 1B?
