Official 2022 Offseason Moves Thread

Manny Pina 2 years, 8MM

Was not expecting backup C to be our first of note signing... lol. Still, if this means we won't ever see the likes of Kevan Smith, Lucroy, or Vogt again... sounds good. I'd guess one of Contreras or Lango will be traded now.

I think it really depends on how much is left in the budget. I'm taking this as a good sign that we moved early on a backup catcher? But you probably could have said the same thing for Smyly. But then again FFF

I've seen a few posters here suggest the Braves will front load Freeman's contract, and they are almost always shut down. However, do folks remember how the Betts contract was structured? It is $365M overall with a $65M signing bonus...a massive front load.

For a team like the Dodgers who are always bumping up against the luxury cap, front loading a contract like this allows them to lower the AAV hit by letting the time value of money work for them.

For a team like the Braves who may have just gotten an unsustainable revenue boost in 2021, giving Freeman a huge signing bonus may be a way to use that cash right now to buy wins in the future. So yeah, a $20M signing bonus for Freeman might be a way to afford that 6/180 contract it will likely take to sign him. Think of it as $20M of unexpectedly found money, plus a 6/160 deal. I don't love it, but it might just work.

The Braves could just choose to pay down their debt with this excess cash. It would kinda sorta accomplish the same goal of freeing future cash flows.

Betts seems like the exception to the rule (that seems likely motivated by the luxury tax which won’t apply to the Braves).

But maybe you’re right. I just don’t see how it financially makes sense.

I believe payroll will be closer to 200 then 150.
We can atleast dream it is due to revenue from the playoffs.
Fingers crossed

I mean, after giving Morton $20M, Pina $3.5M and supposedly offering Freeman 5/135, I have no real evidence to suggest payroll won't be $180M+.

It just seems exceedingly unlikely.

This means they want Contreras to get daily at bats at AAA and want a high quality back up in case of injury.

It’s more money that I thought they would invest, but you can always move a catcher.

Lango doesn't have anything left to prove at AA... no way Contreras get's everyday AAA at bats over him. I think this means one of the two are going to be traded pretty soon (as in this off season)

I think there is a good chance of this happening. I know we say this every off-season, but this team seems ripe for a significant trade.

Yeah not in love giving 4 mil to a backup catcher, seems like a terrrrrible use of resources. Unless payroll is like 170-180 on OD. Would agree it should all but make one of Contreras/Shea available in a trade. Contreras more likely imo.

Braves have alot of pieces to trade away. Touki, Wright, Davidson, Muller, Newk from the pitching side, could toss Waters or Pache, and Contreras or Shea. For who, that's a much better question.

What will we do with Chadwick Chomp? Seems like others have posted, high dollars for a back up catcher. Possible TDA gets moved???????????

Once again, I'm shocked and have no idea what AA is planning. This certainly seems like a move to set up trading a catcher.

Maybe Lango is who the Pirates want for Reynolds? Or who the As want for Olson?

Pirates did draft Henry Davis #1 overall last summer, so I don't know if they would be in the market for a C. A's might make more sense.

That said, after watching Vogt and Smith flail away at the plate and Contreras have no short measure of trouble behind the plate, I can see why they wanted to go into the season set at C.

I got the distinct iimpression that the pitchers simply did not like throwing to Contreras, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him on the way out of town.

TDA started every game in the playoffs, and they signed him to an extension. He's not going anywhere. But the first move being a backup catcher is certainly a little puzzling but AA has a plan, i hope anyway.
