Official 2022 Offseason Moves Thread

The problem with the Hamels and Smyly deals were that AA was somehow trying to add a #4 with upside for more. To get that, he rolled the dice on a guy with injury concerns and/or mysterious bumps in measurables, and it bit him.

So...stop doing that. The Braves need a guy who is almost guaranteed to come in and provide innings with a 4.0-4.5 ERA. That guy needs to pitch until the rotation settles down. He does not need to start a play off game, so stop assuming risk in an attempt to get a guy who could potentially start a playoff game.

Get a guy who can reliably gobble up innings starting on the 4th game of the season, and Greinke is probably that guy. Rodon...no...that's exactly the risk AA should be avoiding.

Have we heard anything about Soroka coming back?

The Braves had 3 starts by "staff" in the playoffs. That's not ideal. There are internal options that could eliminate such an occurrence again, but targeting someone that could be depended upon to start a playoff game would be preferable. I don't think that is Greinke at this point. Rodon can't be depended upon to do much of anything, but if he is right in Sept., Oct. you've got to feel good about him taking the mound.

This is a good summary of the most likely SP options. Verlander signed for $25M, and we know AA offered Freeman $27M. So it’s reasonable to assume AA has at least $50M left to spend for at least 2022 (which is why 1 year deals are so attractive).

I think the most likely landing spot for Olson is the Yanks for a package including Voit and a SS prospect, so I still think Freeman ends up in Atlanta. That gives AA ~$25M for a SP and a LF.

I dunno, I felt like we've thought AA had a lot to spend in the past only to be letdown by how much he ended up spending. It always feels like beat writers drum up these stories without having much insights into AA plans since he's so close to the vest. I'll just hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Collusion by the owners to ice out major FAs therefore decreasing the values of the contracts they sign when they panic.

Teams and players weren’t allowed to talk during the lockout so they just started talking again last night so it may take a week or so to figure things out. I figured trades would go first since GM’s could still talk.

In 2021 Freeman:

Pulled 108 grounders for 15 hits, or a BABIP of .139 (hitting into the shift is bad, no duh).

Hit 18 grounders the other way for 9 hits, or a BABIP of .500 (hitting away from the shift is good, no duh).

MLB overall had a BABIP of .241 on grounders in 2021.

Applying that .241 BABIP to his 108 pulled grounders yields 26 hits, which is 8 more than in 2021.

We also have to apply that .241 BABIP to his 18 oppo grounders resulting in 5 fewer hits.

This is a net gain of about 3 additional singles over his 2021 numbers. So....not a big deal, and why I greatly dislike the idea of banning the shift. Players should be adjusting, and the game changing organically...or not changing organically.

This article does a good job explaining why banning the shift won't do what folks think it will do: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/what-banning-the-shift-does-and-does-not-accomplish/

But people are stupid, so they will ban the shift anyways.

I think batted balls need to be broken down into quality of batted balls to do an accurate analysis but this is an outline of how something like this can be done.
