Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

Should we expect any movement today with the Rule 5 deadline?

Luis de Avila seems like the only lock in my mind. Maybe Jesse Franklin, but I doubt anyone would take him.

I’m more curious about if we trade for anyone. Luke Williams seems like the no brainer to cut from the 40-man. Others that make sense too - Forrest Wall, Chirinos and maybe even Soroka. The deadline to tender a contract to guys is Friday, so could easily cut some of those guys today.

That's what I meant by it. I think we're full on the 40-man so we'd have to cut or trade someone. But I'm wondering if this could help speed along anything AA has cooking for another team's player.

I could see the Braves being in on Soto, Burnes, Adames, Bieber, Glasnow, Cease, Verdugo, Kepler, Arozarena, and Robert...though my guess is the ChiSox won't trade Cease or Robert.

I'm not saying I think they would be good moves to make, or moves AA typically makes, but all those guys make sense in some capacity to fill the holes at SP, LF or upgrading SS.

Imagine trading for Soto and signing Yamamoto? Can someone list out that lineup?

1. Acuna RF
2. Soto LF
3. Riley 3B
4. Olson 1B
5. Ozuna DH
6. Albies 2B
7. Murphy C
8. Harris CF
9. Nicky SS :)

Padres owner passed away in his early 60s. Sad for him. I wonder how that may affect the Padres offseason if at all

Unbelievably sad. He was a great owner for a mid market team. It would be really hard to be a Pads fan right now since it seems inevitable they will scale back dramatically

I sort of doubt it happens, but Arcia is technically a valuable trade option as well, assuming we think Nicky is the better overall player (I certainly do). 3 years control of an average SS for 2 million per year seems fairly valuable in today's market. But would probably need a 3rd team involved since it would be difficult to find a competitive team willing to deal a valuable starter from their current roster.

Should probably add Paul Blackburn to that list, given recent off-season proclivities.

Why are we assuming Lopez is superior? I like Nicky, think the Braves should hang onto him for a reserve role, and think his defensive prowess is probably still a bit underrated; but he literally can’t hit the ball hard, and yet still swings all the time.

At least Arcía hits the ball with some authority when he connects—and he was a solid defender himself in 2023.

Imagine trading for Soto and signing Yamamoto, Ohtani, and Lugo… easy as pie

This year Lopez had the highest EV and BB rates of his career. And those numbers were already at career highs before being traded to us. I think getting away from a terrible player development team like the Royals helped him a lot, so I think his production is sustainable. While it's a small sample size of 72 PAs and 180ish innings in the field, he posted .8 bWAR in his time with us last year. That would equate to roughly 5 WAR over 162 games.

Cal Quantrill was designated for assignment. Injury problems this year but was really good before he was hurt. Could be an interesting gamble

de Avila is the only one that really merits a spot. I don't think Franklin's profile is such that it would land him on someone's 26-man all season. The 2022 TJ was a bump in the road. If he would have made progress on a pretty good 2021 debut, I could see it, but he took a step back statistically in 2023. Of course, the A's and Royals may differ in their assessments.

Lost over a mile per hour on his fastball and saw his big strengths (low BB%, inducing poor-quality contact) take a slide backwards as well. Braves would have to be pretty certain that injuries caused all that to claim him, add him to the 40-man, and pay him the projected $6.6m arb salary.

He’s another guy that goes to bottom feeder team with hopes he can rebound and can be flipped at the deadline
