I'm annoyed I let people here convince me my initial take on Shewmake was wrong. It was clear that any team that drafted Shewmake would want him to add muscle. Dude had the physique of a famine victim when he was drafted and a lot was said about conditioning programs in an MLB system. Without bulking up he had a limited ceiling as a hitter.
At that point I said he was a player without a position. If he added bulk he wouldn't stick at SS defensively but still would never hit enough to play at more premium offensive positions. However, if he stayed slim and agile enough to play SS then he'd never hit enough to start in a major league lineup. Turns out he took the latter route. He never added any significant muscle, has remained a decent defensive SS, but can't hit a lick.
