Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

Marlins are listening to offers for Luzardo… too bad he’d cost a fortune and they likely wouldn’t trade him in division anyways. But would be a fun one to dream on.

We know the bullpen wont be a weakness anytime soon. I do think he gets another starter. Once Yamamoto signs i think we’ll see Cease and maybe Burnes traded. Im surprised we haven't heard much out of Smell.

I keep forgetting Montgomery is still out there too. He’s my FA choice even though it’s likely a pipe dream.

My theory is that AA plans to dip under the luxury tax threshold in 2025 to avoid third-year penalties, and he's making the most of his second year in the tax by taking on all these 2024 dead contracts in exchange for long-term team-controlled assets.

That’s exactly what he’s doing. He’s hoping to hit on cheap mainstays to free up money to spend elsewhere. Spend a bit now to save a lot in the future.

This is something AA has done for years. Looking at payroll 2-3 years down the line and making below market value gambles for future season to round out the team. Did it with Arcia, Yates, doing it with Kelenic.

And doing it without losing picks.

I've never heard of that person. I don't believe for one moment Kelenic is going to be traded.

That’s because she’s not a real person… it’s a troll account. “She” was getting Braves fans all up in arms a couple years ago saying Acuña was on the verge of being traded among other stupid stuff. Then every year she deletes all of her posts and starts again.

Assuming roster resource is right (and I have no reason to think I can crunch those numbers better than that site), the Braves CBT number drops from $267M this year to $166M in 2025. The only arb player not counted in that sum is Ynoa, who can’t be more than $5M no matter what he does this year.

The first CBT limit increases to $257M next year. The Braves will be sitting at around $170M and will have Morton, Fried and Minter, with options on Ozuna, Bummer, TDA and Matzek.

So that’s $87M to replace 2 SPs, DH, backup C and a couple BP arms while dipping back under the cap. Seems perfectly doable. They could pretty comfortably make a run at Soto, Burnes, or anyone else they want.
