Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

Elder didn’t lose the series for the Braves. He should have never seen the line up a second time regardless of how he was doing. Not with all the rest and days off that series had built in. Elder did his job the first time through. Twitter failed game three.

Offense failed the rest of the games. Blaming elder for the braves losing is beyond dumb. Yes I would love to see another pitcher. But notbecause of some dude named Elder. That said I would rather a new manager versus a new pitcher. This team was/is good enough to win it all.

Who is blaming Elder alone? There’s nuance you’re either ignoring or just missing.

Yes, he should have been pulled. Ideally he would never start a playoff game in the first place, especially after how bad he was in the second half. I’d like to avoid him starting a playoff game in the future.

My main reason for wanting another good SP this offseason is bc we’ll be losing 2 next offseason. If he can get 1 good SP now then he wont have as much work to do next offseason. Hopefully 1 of AJSS or Waldrep can step up and be a good starter.

At least this is a logical viewpoint.

Lol it’s at the bottom? What world are we in?

Surrendering game 3 by starting Elder in a series tied 1-1 is a pretty huge reason why the series was ultimately lost.

The offense and strider not showing up are much bigger reasons. In fact those are the biggest reasons.

At the bottom of your list as it was at the deadline? You can kick the can down the road and piece meal it together all you want. At some point you gotta outpitch your opponent when your best is not on the mound or you're not hitting. Elder wasn't it. That caliber works in the regular season. The playoffs..Meh.

Keep thinking the Braves need a 3 WAR SP as their #3 to compete in the playoffs.

Unless the playoff structure has changed, I would much rather have a strong deep pen and a competent manager over another starter that is slightly better than elder. Game 3 should have been a bullpen game with high leverage lefties ready every time the top of the order came around. The Faillies didn’t even adjust the lineup because they knew twit wouldnt deploy his lefties correctly. I think AA is building the bullpen back to twit proof it. That is more important than some middling starter that may or may not get through 4 innings of a game 3.

People pointing to elder starting game 3 as a reason to get more starting pitching is foolish. Elder pitching game 3 and facing the top of the order twice is a reason to get a new manager. Not more pitching. That team, even with elder, was good enough to crush the faillies. They didn’t. The offense was sleep walking with no approach and the manager was just sleeping.

Again. We would all love to get Yamo or another ace but there is a very good chance we won’t and the Braves will still be better than every other team when healthy.

The Braves have had a miraculous % of the position player prospects hit and have seen a ludicrous % of the SP prospects flame out following some really good early results. I'm hoping AJ and Hurston make that second % look a little better for the Braves. I think the Braves brass really likes those two. And the class of Schwellenbach, Kuehler, Murphy and Ritchie is only a couple of years from knocking on the door as well. With the offense the Braves have they don't need multiple aces lined up to take the mound and the costs associated. They need solid 3s taking the mound every night.

Awful that we will watch Fried leave for a comp pick, but whatever.

I think it's simple. AA is using money (in the way of bad contracts) to acquire usefull pieces without giving up anybody useful on the farm. He's protecting a farm that was decimated by the international sanctions. Braves are an insanely stacked roster adding at the margins here.

So (and I'm sure there are other people who can do this better, just trying to wrap my head around it)

We got:
Player 24 Sal AddCommit Min Max Yrs
Bummer $5.5M $14.7M 3 3
Lopez $4M $22M 3 4
Murfee $750k 1 5
Stephens $750k 1 4
Kelenic $750k 1 5
Perdomo $750k 1 5
Fletcher $6M $6.5M 2 4
Kerr $1M 1 6
TOTAL $19.5M $43.2M

We pay for:
Gonzales $9.5M
Stassi $5M
Carpenter $5.5M
White $7M $8M
TOTAL $27M $8M

So he doesn't have to hit on all those pitchers, only a few, since he's got six slots filled for sure. He's commiting $19M for those 8 slots, not too bad. Future commitments other than Fletcher seem a reasonable burden.

It would sure be nice if he hit on Kelenic. If he doesn't, he can go get a 1-2 WAR LF at the deadline.

The dead money is concentrated in '24, and Morton's got to be retiring (right? right?) so he's kept his powder dry for a full retail ace acquisition in '25 - preferably (for me), a 6'4", lean Jewish lefthander with a cheesy mustache.

And that comp pick will be after the fourth round now since we’re in the luxury tax.

I've never been sure of anything more in my life than I am that Matt Carpenter will get a big hit against us in an important game this coming season.

Two things can be true. It was a colossally moronic decision by Snit to leave Elder in. But if you can't navigate a lineup twice without getting shelled, you have no business starting a playoff game.
