Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

Boy, do I agree with you on Mauer. Nice player, but really? His last five years were an average of 8 HR, 58 RBI, .278/.359/.388/.747, OPS 105, and he DHed and played first base - didn't catch those years. 580 PA/yr. Average WAR 2.1.

He didn't have 1000 RBI in his 15 year career.

I don't think that's a Hall of Famer, let alone a first ballot HoF.

Mauer is much more that just a “nice” player, but he’s definitely a borderline HoFer. With him getting in, there’s now no reason Joe Torre shouldn’t also be in (as a player).

Agree to disagree for all the reasons I stated. He had a short prime and hung around hitting singles and standing next to 1B for five years to earn his $23M per. He should have been indicted for stealing $115M from the Twins.

My issue isn't necessarily that he got in. It's that he simply didn't have the type of career that warranted first ballot consideration.

The BBWAA got rid of most of the old dinosaurs who hadn't covered the game in decades just so the travesties like people not voting for Maddux never happen again.

If you're making the argument that a first ballot HoF should be only inner circle HoFs... well we can have that discussion. But if you're a hall of famer you should just be a hall of famer.

Yep. Druw over 60% - he’s a lock. May not be for two years from what I understand- buts he’s as good as in.

19 days until pitchers and catchers ….

Will be one of the greatest rises in HOF history. He barely made the cut at 7 percent his first year.

He should have been in the Hall of Fame a few years ago. He’s basically Ozzie Smith (when it comes to saving runs) with big time Pop

His resume is that of a borderline hall of famer, regardless of your personal feelings.

And my argument is that Mauer wasn't necessarily deserving of the HOF. He's the very definition of a borderline HOFer. He's the type of guy that generally sits on the ballot for 5-10 years, gaining ~5% each year until he either gets in or falls off the ballot.

As was said earlier, Joe Torre had a more impressive career and yet he never got in as a player.

I think the writers understood Mauer's concussions caused a big downside.

He got the Koufax treatment without retiring early. If only Andruw got that treatment.

Standards for catchers has fallen off a bit, probably with good reason

Which seems weird given that he played in the same era as Pudge, Posey, Molina, Posada, and Kendall among others. It's pretty much been the golden era of catchers since the mid/late 90s.

The best argument I have seen is that the 1st 10 years of his career is behind only Piazza, Bench, and Berra in terms of value. But it seems like you could use that argument for Murphy and Druw and neither one are currently in the HOF.
