Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

Reds declined the option on Joey Votto and released a statement saying they couldn't guarantee him playing time. From the sounds of it, they are cutting ties for this coming season and not trying to bring him back on a cheaper deal.

I wonder if he retires or signs somewhere else.

Any idea what Nola would cost? Think he can stay a #2 for whatever is required?

I think for the top-tier guys (of which Nola is one) the initial asks are going to center as much or more on years as opposed to AAV and that trends against how the Braves have approached the FA pitching market. There may be some decent guys bordering on the first tier after a couple of ridiculous contracts are meted out and the market adjusts.

White Sox don’t exercise Tim Anderson’s option. Could be an interesting buy low option. Then maybe trade Arcia while he has some value.

I think Anderson is a clubhouse cancer and wanna stay away from that dude. It may make Grissom more appealing to the White Sox

I don’t pretend to have a better feel for the market than the guys at MLBTR, and upwards of $150M seems reasonable. Of course, every year a couple guys get left out and have to settle for a short deal…could be Nola, but I doubt it.

Here is the closest thing to a contract prediction we have for the SP of interest from back in August: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/08/2023-24-mlb-free-agent-power-rankings-august-edition.html

Yamamoto - "easy to envision him receiving offers of eight years...opt-out opportunities"

Montgomery - "Taillon (4/68) and Walker (4/72) feel like more of a floor...ought to be able to command a fifth guaranteed year...nine-figure deal"

Nola - "five or six year deal topping nine figures should still be attainable...$162MM...were it not for the home run concerns"

Giolito - "six-year deal still seems plausible"

Snell - "legitimate Game 1 starter in a postseason series...nine-figure deal of five or more years in length"

Hader - "will take aim at making Diaz’s (5/102) record"

Lorenzen, EdRod and Stroman in the HM section with no real info.

So the play seems to be bring back Morton, then wait to get one of the guys listed above on a 3 year deal, or be the team that jumps at Yamamoto. If that fails be the team who grabs Lorenzen, EdRod or Stroman.

EdRod opted out of his remaining 3/49 and doesn’t have a QO attached, so that’s a good rough gauge of the floor for anyone in that range of SP.

Been reported Ohtani's 3 preferred teams are the Giants, Dodgers, and Rangers.

I wonder if the Braves will look more closely at the LHP group. Fried is their only LHP in the rotation now and is an impending FA after 2024. I suppose one could include Shuster and Dodd, but they are back-end guys at best. If there is a concentration on LHP, Rodriguez and Montgomery head the list. Again, I think the contractual years as opposed to AAV is going to dictate players' decisions.

People really expect Giolito to get a 6 year deal after the year he had? I mean I like the upside as much as anyone, and I think he's a great bounce back candidate. But this is back to back seasons with an ERA over 4.80.

How much of this will we read before he signs with the dodgers as they planned for 2 years now?

Even then, i'm not sure if they would go to the 10+ year length. They're usually like AA in going high AAV, lower years but it is Ohtani..

You’re basically getting a bat bc he just had his 2nd TJ so his pitching days may be over.

Someone usually gets squeezed out and has to take a 1-1. But i agree i cant see him get 6 years. At best maybe a 2-1 or 1-1. I'd take him on a 1-1 if we dont keep Charlie, and get someone else for the other spot, who is a little more better/expensive.

I mean, he can still pitch but yeah. After his 2nd TJ, i'm not sure how much he'll be pitching.

He’s not getting 6 years.

Ohtani isn’t going to the Giants or Rangers. He’s gonna be a Dodger or Yankee.

His FA will be rather interesting with his 2nd TJ. One more, and he's basically done as a pitcher. He may be a Dodger but i'm not sure the kind of contract they'd give him.

You may want to review the Betts contract. They will go as big as it takes for young superstars.

I’m a little surprised we haven’t heard anything about the Morton and Rosario options yet. Makes me think they are working out new deals with them.
